Bar end removal

Can someone explain to me how to remove the bar ends? I'm feeling like a real idiot; trying repeatedly and failing to get them off. I'd like to try to install a set of Trackside Brush guards.

I removed mine in about 5 minutes, using the two flat blade screwdriver method.

I also installed the Barkbusters.
