Drilling axle for safety wire

I've ordered a spare rear axle to carry on my trip, also I believe it will be useful lining up the brake bracket while installing the rear tire. I'm also thinking of drilling a 1/8 hole in the axle for safety wire to keep the nut from coming off, seen that on a few videos and I think the wire will stop that. Anyone done that?

Could drill a hole and get a castle nut that will fit and put in a cotter pin. My old 1982 has that design on the rear axle and it makes more sense to me

The rear axle nut is a locking type and will not back off. Notice when you remove it that it won't twist easily with your fingers. To align things when you install the axle, you may find that a screwdriver works pretty well too.

Can't remember which videos but 2 guys on YouTube riding 125s on the tat both had the rear axle nut come off, I think it was some guy rides and a guy from Montana riding from Colorado to Oregon. You're right it shouldn't happen but it does.

I’m with you, take that spare and put it in a vice and do the thing! Be a maverick and figure it out for us! 🧙

Good idea to use something on brake side like the spare axle (or anything else) like you suggest to help align things while inserting the axle from the opposite side as it would help hold the brake assembly in place. I used a tie wrap around the brake assembly and the swing arm to hold the brake assembly from flopping around. The spacers were also wanting to fall out so applied some grease to the spacer which was tacky enough to hold the spacer in place long enough to get everything back together. Don't know if it was necessary but I wedged half of a clothes pin between the brake pads to keep them from closing upon removal of the tire/brake disc assembly.

I've done it 4 times in the last couple months and I've struggled with it each time, I to used tywraps on the brake caliper, the clothes pin tip is good, I've used a 10mm hex key to help align the brake end once I got the chain end started, still a pain when you look at all the holes that have to line up perfectly to go in, honestly it my least favorite thing to do on the bike and was the leading reason for going tubeless
