Fender lift vs. re-drilling

For those who have done the fender lift kit to fit a 3.0 tire, which kit is considered the best? I've seen the posts and videos complaining about the run of the mill kit on eBay. For those that simply re-drilled the original fender, did you find that it was enough room for the 3.0 and would you do it that way again? Lastly, has anyone here run the Diablo high-fender kit?

I lifted the front fender for less gravel scraping and mud/snow accumulation there with 2.75-17 trials tires. Haven't run knobby 3.0 tires with the lifted fender, but my opinion is that drilling the fender is the better option. From a practical sense it's cheaper, less hardware to deal with, eliminates the risk of having fasteners pinch the shock boots, and doesn't put fasteners inside the fender that protrude farther than the fender itself does. Downside is that you're modifying a stock part rather than attaching a more reversible bolt-on mod. I don't think you're going to have any height clearance issues if you do redrill the fender.

Aesthetically I also prefer the redrill, it looks like how Honda would have shipped it if they sold the bike with more aggressive trail tires, while the lift kit I tried lifted the fender so much higher that the gap between tire and fender looked odd, too much gap.

Did you need to relocate the horn higher up with just the re-drill method? I see that it can easily be done without buying an aftermarket part. Also, is there a suggested measurement for where you should drill?

I moved the horn prior to drilling the fender, so not sure if it's needed but as you mention it was free to move the horn up, just removed a bracket it was on and put it back in place with the same stock hardware.

There's a limited amount of flexibility in where you can drill the fender. I didn't measure for drilling them, just eyeballed it, marked with a punch, and then drilled.
