Flashing ABS light

Has anyone experienced a flashing ABS light on their bike? I know it usually clears itself over roughly 20mph but mine seems to stay on now. My bike is used for short runs usually 2-3 miles a few days a week. It currently has about 700 miles on the odometer. My battery occasionally goes flat from lack of use but charges and keeps the charge if ridden for a few minutes. Any thoughts?

Ridden a few times a week I wouldn't expect the battery to go flat , where is the power going :unsure: . First I would confirm that the ABS system is working. If it is still under warranty I would get it to the dealer and let them sort it out.

The ABS is dependent on two speed sensors, one at the front wheel, and one at the countershaft that drives the front sprocket.
If you have changed your tires or sprockets to a significantly different ratio that could be a cause. If you have not, the first thing I would check is to make sure nothing is obstructing the wheel speed sensor on the front of the bike. It's under where it says ABS on the front right fork leg, and it reads the pulser ring (ABS cutouts) that sit inside of the front brake rotor.

Beyond that you can find more troubleshooting steps at section 4-29 of the Service Manual, but with only 700 miles on it you may want to take it to the dealer and have them hook it up to a computer to pull the code and diagnose it.

I don’t know if these particular bikes have a abs pump but if so it could that. How many miles? Could the fluid need flushed?

The bike is totally stock. I actually just came back from a short ride of about 2 miles. Once I got up to about 30 miles an hour, the light went out but when I came to a stop, it started blinking again. So strange

Another vote for low Voltage here. Verify with a meter what the resting Voltage of your battery is (engine off, nothing on. Best if it's been sitting for a while). It should be in the area of 12.5 VDC. Then start the engine and take another reading and that number should be higher (I haven't checked my Trail yet but I would expect it to be in the area of 13.5 VDC). If it's the running Volts are the same as the resting Volts then you likely have a problem with your Stator/charging system.

My guess is you probably need a new battery. Batteries, especially smaller MC and Powersports batteries don't like going 'dead' then being re-charged to full more then a couple of times before they call it quits.

A glowing ABS light typically indicates insufficient voltage signal, a flashing ABS light (in your case) is telling you there is a problem. If your bike is still covered by the warranty, take it in. If they see you've been "working" on it, they have the option to deny warranty coverage.

I put the bike on the trickle charger overnight and it seems to have brought the battery back up. Light is now off. I'll try to trickle it for a few nights before buying a new battery. In the end it appears to have been a low volge issue, thankfully!

And if they do that you remind them or Honda Corporate of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
Good luck, this is with any manufacture, too many shadetree mechanics out there playing mechanic with their internet associates degree. And when they can't figure it out, they take it in screaming warranty. I've seen it for years. Some dealers will file a "Goodwill" policy and cover it, but most will deny once its been "serviced" by a non authorized shop.

Third party service, shadetree mechanics, and aftermarket parts don't void warranties in the USA. They just create cause for an issue to not be covered by the warranty if the issue can be attributed to that work or those parts. See how mistaking that difference went for Harley-Davidson last year:

@trailrider305 If you're riding the bike often but only for short distances, the electric start might be draining the battery more than it gets recharged with each ride. You might want to continue using the trickle charger with the new battery if that's your riding pattern, or switch to kick starting the bike for shorter rides. Unless you have accessories with extra parasitic draw, the battery should be safe to leave unattended for a month, longer than that and it should be charged and/or disconnected.

It seems just about everyone has a 'Dealer-screwed-me-over' story, thus the rise of the 'Shade Tree Mechanic'. Nothing I own returns to a Dealer unless it's for a recall or warranty issue. That said, these Trail's are about as simple as they come. Pretty easy for a Shade Tree Mechanic or for pretty much any independent MC/Powersports shop to maintain or repair. Keep receipts, make sure the work is done on-time and your warranty should stay intact.
