Gear Indicator

Hello all,

I've been hemming and hawing swapping the stock cluster for an Opmid or something else, mainly for the gear indicator. The Opmid is nice but honestly the stock isn't bad if it just had the indicator I'd leave it.

I've come across this on youtube but all my research hasn't been able to produce anything.

Does anyone know where to find one of these/could provide guidance? I'd definitely install it if I could locate/figure this out. Thanks!

A cheap $20 tach can be used. You will quickly learn what rpm is indicated at what speed in each gear. There is no mod to the bike, mount it to the handle bar, wrap the wire 5 or 6 times around the plug wire, secure the wire with tie wraps....done.

That same gear indicator can be found on eBay searching "CT125 Gear display Light Indicator Monitor"
A video from the seller:

There is a different one available through Webike: https://japan.webike.net/products/24295142.html
Installation requires that you swap out the stock gear position sensor as it only picks up on Neutral, while the replacement picks up on N-1-2-3-4.

If all you need is a gear shift indicator (as opposed to a tach) Beezdeals in Thailand sells them for about $25. I have one on both of our bikes and have found them a very useful addition.

I wanted an indication of when I was in first gear, so when stopped I knew I was back in first without going to "N" and then up one. Don't care about what gear I'm in while moving because speed and RPM will dictate that. Don't want to count shifts or remember what gear I'm in either.
So, I rotated the neutral switch, so the "N" light was on in first and made a little clip to hold the switch in place in that position. Simple and functioned well for my use. But If someone else used the bike they might be confused. Also, I had to defeat the side stand switch because with it you could put the stand down in first but not neutral with the engine running.
In an effort to have a correct indication and a functioning side stand switch, I looked at this. https://japan.webike.net/products/24295142.html
But $125.xx seemed a little high. So, a bought one of these.
Motorcycle Gear Indicator Universal Blue Motorcycle Gear Highlight LED Display | eBay
And a gear indicator switch for a Super Cub.
Had to lengthen the wires a little with some solder and shrink tubing. But it was a simple install and works fine, for $25 and a little time investment.

Well, that's one way to do it...

A gear indicator would be awesome. It’s one of my only gripes with the ct. that and the stock seat.

^^^ lol. To each their own. This has been my experience.

I even bought the Diablo seat and the stock is far more comfortable then that cheap seat by comparison after break-in. Unless you enjoy vibrations right up your sphincter (and I do not). I am actually shocked people recommended that thing what a cheap waste of money.

Anyway not to get off topic but I am definitely going to buy one of those indicators off ebay and install it. Even though I am 99% sure I know the gear I am in there is still indecision at times and clearly seeing the gear visibly would be great (for me). This is my experience after a full spring/summer of riding it. The Honda Metropolitan had this basic fixture (same semi auto shifting) but for some reason Honda didn't feel the need to bother on a 2023 model. For myself as a safety professional, I am disappointed by this but doesn't matter as the fix is not too complicated looks like.

This eBay/alababa/beezeeals shift indicators don’t work on 2023 ja65 trails. The harness is different now and the stock magnet part seems to already be able to read the gear of the stock gauge could read it - some hidden menu??

The stock sensor may only pick up neutral vs in gear, as the neutral indicator light is a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirement.

They will if you rewire the connector. Mine read backward, ie, 4th in 1st. The stock JA65 sensor has all positions with contacts, not just neutral. Took me awhile to do it but now my shift indicator reads correctly.
