I wanted a place to store my registration and insurance card other than the toolbox (awkward to access when needed, and after adding a few tools mine's tight on space), so I considered adding a pouch under the seat but it was tight on space so I landed on installing a license plate box. Cost was $32.60 including shipping and tax on eBay. Manufacturer's website with specs and install instructions is here http://icubed-online.com/grifter.html
Further installation guidance can be found on YouTube for those of us who are visual learners.
Parts minus 2 keys.
Before and after. Was happy to replace the plastic plate mounting hardware that came with the bike. The plate itself still gets good light from the license plate light even though it's a little further out.
Clear plastic sleeve sticker installed inside the box, doesn't fit anything much larger than a credit card. I laminated my insurance card and registration and keep them slid in there. You could tape a zip-lock bag or a bigger label envelope in there if you wanted, and it will fit some of the GPS trackers that are on the market like Invoxia's. You could keep the foam insert in there if you wanted to hold anything loose in place, but I always plan as if the box were to open itself on a bumpy road, same as some here have experienced with the OEM toolbox. I've used these on other bikes before and they're not perfect but they are convenient. Threadlocker should be used on the lock cylinder threads to keep the backing nut secured to it, RTV should be used on the mounting hardware to weather seal and secure it, you shouldn't count on the gasket to remain water tight, the mounting hardware is SAE, it's a bit pricey, the exterior plate mounting screws thread into plastic so removing and reinstalling them repeatedly or over tightening can strip the plastic, the mechanism of both the lock and the hinge can be clunky, and the lock just like any other lock is only a deterrent, anyone who wanted to could open the box with a knife or screwdriver. All that said, it meets my needs and it's worked out well enough on other bikes that I just bought it again.
Curious to see what other "always there" storage solutions folks come up with for this bike.
