Worth getting headlight and taillight guards IMHO. I've got a headlight guard for errant 2x4s but also have a sheet of protective film used as screen guards that I was thinking of stretching over the headlight for pebble protection.
I miss the old days but the world has changed and we still need to have some fun.
I wouldn't be surprised if a retrofit common bulb adapter for physical and electrical connections is eventually figured out.
If your headlight takes a hit or shoots craps you would have both elements right there to work with. OK, heading to eBay to look for a trashed one!

Reviving this thread. My tail light lense/housing got smashed up. Its been glued back together BUT, it looks like poo.

I've found a couple used tail-light units on the e-bay but they're still $500.

What are my options for replacing this thing other than paying my penance.

Aftermarket? Thailand?

Interesting - I saw the Tanaka & Kijima on ebay but didn't really give them much thought as I was unsure if they would be plug & play but, the posted links show them "compatible"

I guess I will pick one of them and add a few items from my "wish list" to a japan order and see how this works out.

thanks @dmonkey - question -which way would you go, if you were in my riding boots?

How busted up is your tail light assembly? Rather than glue, I've had decent luck using a Harbor Freight plastic weld kit on opaque body plastics on other bikes, and then using plastic resin meant for lens repair (designed for UV exposure and passing light) to fill the cracks and missing pieces in lenses.

Personally if I were needing to buy a replacement it'd be a tough call due to the price, but I'd likely go with an OEM replacement and either buy a guard for it or invest the time and money to make a mold of the lens and make a few spares. A deciding factor being that I don't prefer the look of the aftermarket options, if they appeal to you I'd say go for it. I have other Kijima parts on my bike and they are good quality. Have never heard of TANKA TRADING so would try to find reviews on other products of theirs before considering that as an option.

I've tried plastic welding in the past on BMW's I've owned...never got even "acceptable" results.

Its badly damaged - its pieced together with glue & working but, the entire housing really needs to be replaced, not just the 'led unit' - I'm not sure if I'm hung up on the look but, an aftermarket unit would absolutely impact the resale value

Jesus, that's insanity for the tail light. I would have bet money on the headlight being more expensive. I need to go out to the garage and see how I can make sense of this lol.

I watched a video last night from a Mechanic which states some up-level model F-150's have tailights which (complete) cost $2,500! Mainly on account of all the sensors, LED's and whatnot. Bonus that the electrical on the F-150's tailights gets wet it can cause many other electronic modules to stop working. The original complaint in the video I watched was that the stereo and A/C had quit working.

I understand progress, but think some things get taken too far. Personally, I think the pendulum is about to shift back to simplicity.'

And now I gotta go order a taillight guard for my Trail...

I have a Super Duty with similar tail lights, it's insane what all they shove in them now. And I agree on the guards for the tail light, I always thought they were silly and mostly for looks but I might need to consider something now.

If the electronics are still good maybe there’s a possibility of swapping them into either a burned out one, or use them in a different housing. From what I’ve seen of the electronics inside the headlamp the circuits are designed very conservatively, there’s not much excess heat to dissipate because the emitters are efficient and not overdriven, so you need to find something that’s waterproof. Bottom line is don’t throw away the electronics because, at a minimum, you can sell them for $400 if somebody’s electronics go out. (I haven’t tried to take it apart, it probably sealed with Hondabond but that is overcome by heat).
That’s brutal $$.

How about a Subaru Impreza with the steering sensing head lights? Bulb burns out and whole unit has to be replaced. $1300 plus labor!

I wonder if a clever lad with a 3D printer could repair rather than replace these obscenely priced light housings:unsure: M
