Is this a bad idea?

My 2023 Trail is currently in the water all lonely on some cargo ship, but in the meantime I purchased a Pelican 0350 case with plans of making a quick mount to the rear luggage rack. It weighs about 20lbs empty with exterior dimensions of [LxWxH] 21x22x24 (ID 20x20x20). Im aware there will be a little bit of a foopa off the edges but as long as it wouldnt drastically hurt performance or safety, thats fine. Can any seasoned trail owners tell me if you see any major issues with this plan? Thanks!

Can't help with that particular box, but if you do a search for pelican or rear box there are many posts to read and lot's of great ideas on how to attach rear boxes. Can I ask how you know it is on it's way here from overseas? I've got 3 dealers I work through, have two Trails and nobody knew they were for sure officially getting them until they were being unloaded from trailer. If you have a dealer that knows when a bike is shipped from the Honda factory I need to start buying from them. Save me a lot of stress and heartache. Dealer in Wisconsin?

I did a quick measure of the rear rack the other day and it it came out to 16Wx18L. I do not think you will have any issue with that case at all.

I went through a local place, however all the dealer could say was that it was shipped and has left the factory in the first week of September so maybe I’m just naive but I’m hoping it’ll be here for my birthday in November so I can work on it through the winter

By itself, I don't necessarily think it is a bad idea. it is 20lbs of additional weight, though. The other thing, which is more limited to my use and area, is that I am hesitant to put much weight towards the rear of the bike because I have a tendency to lift the front wheel on steep hills. That's why I don't have one of those top boxes that mounts beyond the rear of the rack.

As with some previous posts addressing the co$t of the rear tail light assembly, one might want to plan for some protection, maybe in the form of the tube style protectors. They might fit in some way with the box mounting..

I agree, I just added a rear tailight guard to my Trail last night. I used one I found on Amazon. The directions sucked but once I threw those away (and removed the bracket for the rear reflector since it partially-blocked the rear plate) the install went pretty well.
