Longer Seat

Has anyone out there replaced their stock seat with one of the aftermarket types that are longer and extend over the rear bar on the luggage rack? They look appealing to me because it allows you to extend your legs a bit without sitting on the steel part of the luggage rack. Currently, I have a piece of foam pipe insulation around the steel bar. There a bunch online for sale from various shops. Thank you.

MotoLord Long Seat

Just installed the Motolord longer seat and I love it so far. Much more comfortable riding position for me (I'm 5'11"), lets me keep the stock rack, and makes it look a little more motorcycle and less scooter imo.

Yeah, a few people have done things like that. It's the Motolord Long Seat that comes to mind. Some have chopped off that bar as well.

I don't necessarily advocate chopping parts off your bike, but in the case of the bar, that thing had to go! Best mod I have done to mine. It allowed me to extend the seating just a little without taking up too much of the rack space. To me, these really long seats that go over the bar are for carrying passengers more than for us taller people. They just made an indent in the seat where the bar is. I would imagine the bar being still there will still be felt by your tail bone. Here is what I did with mine and I really like it because it allows me to sit a few inches back which is perfect and I was able to keep the rack space.

Not ready to chop off the rack handle - yet - so took a page from Daytripper’s playbook and added a filler behind the handle. not feeling the rack so may well be a solution short of the Motolordd extended seat.

Nice! Is that what is being sold by Amazon as a rear fender seat on a Sportster? Been getting lots of Harley Davidson recommendations because of that!

Yes one and the same from Amazon. Needed to add height to get above the bar so might as well have a bit of storage space.

Finished break-in miles today and not happy with my seat treatment. Not feeling the bar but now sitting on the gap between the OEM seat and added cushion. Looks like time to get out the hack saw..

You could leave 1/4" lip of the bar and plastic cap the cut edge.
That's my plan.

Very good idea! Still working on avoiding the irreversible surgery of cutting off the bar. Slightly lowered the added cushion base and added a piece of pool noodle to fill the gap. Better but not perfect so thinking eventaully the bar will have to go.

I just dont see ANY value for that bar being there except to let your butt know the seat is too short.
I dont use it for maneuvering to center stand the bike.... There are side rails for that.
Cut it off and add a pad. Think I might cut the rear part of the seat foam to lose the lip too.

Yes. I used a Porta Band saw which got it close to flush and then carefully ground the rest down with a 4" grinder. There is a hole there and I used some epoxy to fill it and then Bondo over and smoothed it up and painted it with gloss black. It is now hidden by the small seat I added.

There seems to be much disagreement on whether we should cut off the bar or leave it on, much like the heal shifter which itself never really bothers me. I suspect with the rack bar, the ones who say cut it off are generally 6' or taller.. If the rack could have been turned around 180 degrees so the bar was at the back, like the original 90's and 110's I would have gone for that that. I suspect some 5' 5" head of design decided to have it at the front end of the rack without regard for taller people.

The chances of accelerating so fast that you throw something off the back are real close to zero…. The chances of “locking” it up or braking hard and slamming your cargo forwards seem significantly higher.
