MSR fuel bottle

Is anyone using an MSR fuel bottle for spare fuel? A 30oz will get you about 1/4 gallon. I was thinking about a Nelson-Rigg Trails End Fuel Bottle Holder to attach it to the center rack. I. The picture it’s on the right, but would probably mount to left away from pipes.

I've not used one for a spare fuel container on this bike...yet however I have personally used these bottles on my other bikes and ATV's. One one of the ATV's I mounted a 'Tractor Manual Tube' (Google it to see what they look like) to the Quad which I carried the fuel bottle in. Worked pretty well and survived a couple of years of hard off-roading all over the Mojave and Utah before I sold that Quad and moved-on to another which I mounted a larger fuel container on.

Honestly though, most of the time if I feel the need to carry the MSR fuel bottle I just carry it in my backpack. I've yet to have one of these bottles leak and if I'm carrying gas I'm going to be far off-road so I'm not worried about an on-road collision. One thing I really like about the MSR Fuel Bottle is that if you ever need to transfer gas from one bike to another, it's pretty easy to get the mouth of the bottle under the tank to the fuel line.

These days most of the time if I feel the need to carry extra gas I use a Roto Pak fuel container. The one I use holds ~1.5 Gallons of gas, though they make many different sizes. I've attached mounts for one of these containers to two of my bikes and one of my 'Buggies. Having more gas then I need is nice and I frequently end-up sharing it with others.

The only drawbacks I've found with the Roto-Pak is that it's really hard (if not impossible) to get them shipped to California (no biggie, I generally go to Arizona, Nevada or Utah once or twice a year and they are readily available there). That and once you start carrying one, most of your friends will expect you to carry it all the time.

Gatorade bottle meets my need, and the price is perfect!
A Gatorade bottle would concern me. For one the screw-on cap (with no gasket or locking mechanism) could be a problem if (/when) the bottle goes sideways or upside-down.

Reminds me of the time a friend of mine (who's Quad was known for burning a lot more gas then the rest of our group) packed a small 1.5 Gallon plastic gas can (the standard kind most people would keep gas for their Lawnmower in). He carried it in the tail bag of his Quad, which seemed to work well for the first 30 minutes or so of our ride when he realized it had dumped it's contents all over the inside of his bag (and his lunch!) After that he switched to using a Roto-Pak.

YMMV

Copy that, I have 1000's of baja miles with a 32oz gatorade bottles in either a backpack or saddlebag on a Honda 450x with fuel. 12oz bottles for extra oil also.

My MSR friends dont have issues either so everyone gets to do what works for them!

Just as an FYI to anybody interested; you can get a similar bottle from Primus in 1.5 liter (51 oz.). Don’t waist your time with the Chinese brands on Amazon. The aluminum is so thin at the neck you can see the threads from the outside of the bottle. Hope this helps.

^ yup. thats what i have. I know for a fact it will survive falling off on the road full of fuel @ 50 ish miles and hour and sliding all over the place, one of the old mounts i had let go (why i moved to the fire extinguisher one).

Is that a theoretical or practical exercise :D?
