New tires

I put the 3 incher Shinko 244s front and back. There’s definitely clearance issues on the front- had to remove fender to test-ride. It’s demonstrably different. You can feel the slight rise in CG and the bike doesn’t carve on asphalt nearly as nicely as with stock- just more effort required. Also more tire noise. I ordered the fender lift kit for the sake of time, but I dont like how it looks on the web. I may design a custom riser with say, 7/8” rise for my machinist to fabricate. If so, I’ll see what pricing looks like in bulk, in case I may sell them to forum members.
Lmk if above 50 you hear anything rubbing on the mud flap bolts. My thought is the tire expands outward and rubs the bolts. I was thinking about shaving them down, could be worse or better with a higher fender.
Lots of rocks grabbed by the tires do scrape the inside of the fender for me. Mostly in gravel.

Im not understanding why you would run over-sized tires? the 241 shinkos are block tread and rated up to 90+ mph, and are available in 2.75 as stated in the beginning of this thread.
  • These motorcycle tires are P rated for speeds up to 94 mph
with the footnote:

(Tire size 2.50-17, 2.50-17 (Part# 369-874442, 369-874452) is L rated for speeds up to 75 mph. Tire size 3.00-12 (Part# 369-874451) is J rated for speeds up to 62 mph).

I just like the more aggressive tread pattern of the 244s better than the 241s.

C8DECA3D-4287-4BFA-A92B-ADCF58EB7503.jpegHeres what 3150 miles look like on the cheap factory tires. installed SR241s. New tires are 4 ply nylon. Old were. 2 ply nylon. I have about 75 miles on new tires. My observation so far: decreased top speed by 2-3 MPH. I can feel the knobs on the tires when riding on pavement. Not bad but not as smooth as old tires. So much better on gravel roads. Did not feel the front tire wash out at all unlike old tires. I did order the front fender raising brackets. New tires are taller and I heard rocks pinging on the gravel. The biggest improvement is that it looks like a Honda Trail !

Heres mine with the 244's, the fender risers pinch the boot pretty good. I may try the drill new holes in the fender right below the current ones if the rocks pinging ever really bother me. You may also notice, at least on my 244's that over 45mph it starts rubbing on the mud flap bolts when the tire is spun out to max diameter.

I ended up returning my 3.0x17 244s for the reason of rubbing (front AND rear) after having mounted them. Hoping Shinko come out with a 2.75" down the road because it seems like a good tread on an inexpensive tire. The IRC GP-22 is out in 2.75x17 size but can't find it in the USA yet, only Asia.

From an inquiry I had with Shinko. From what I've found I think people who put 3.0's on the front have regretted it.

Thank you for reaching out to Shinko Tires USA!
I completely agree! The 244 would be an excellent tire for the new Honda Trail 125.
We have had a couple of inquiries about these tires on this bike and based on the information we have about the new Honda Trail 125, the 244 comes in the correct fitment sizes.
The sizes necessary convert to either 2.50-17 for the front and/or rear, but if you were looking for a thicker look on the back tire or a thicker look altogether, then the 3.00-17 would work just as well!
Depending on the type of riding you are doing, I would recommend the 244 Dual Sport tire if you are looking for a tire that is just as much at home on dirt as it is the pavement. If you ride more on the dirt, the SR 241 Trail Tire would make an excellent tire for your application. Both tires come in the same sizes and both can be used in either front or rear application. A note about the SR241: They are considered a dual sport tire, and are DOT approved, but are not recommended for extended highway use (which is why they are better if you ride more on dirt!)

Please let me know if you have any more questions!!

Thanks for being a Shinko customer!

Not me, no rubbing except occasionally over 45mph on the front, happens so seldom I haven't chosen to change the bolts on the front mud flap.

Just spooned on a set of these after running the stock for about 160 miles of 50/50. They are much quieter than i was expecting on the road. They are not as nimble as the stockers on the street & hardpack and pick up more gravel are my only gripes. Might try some beadliner on the inside of front fender to try and deaden the sound of the gravel on the fender. You can hear that comming before you can hear the muffler/engine noise. The larger tire on the back seems to help absorb rocks better and corner better in the loose stuff. The bigger front was more of a challenge to keep on line in the uphill ruts and rocks. Coming from motocross I want to throw my body around to help control the bike offroad but you really cant on this since the seat is so small and no tank to grip. Going up steep hills the tire does not contact the ground as much since the weight is low and back, just kind of bounces around. Low and slow is what she does best.

Looks so good! Are these the 3" 244s or the 2.5"?

fyi, as a foot note...
earlier in this thread the comment was made about lower speed tires not being as sticky. not nec true. it has to do with number of plies etc.. not the rubber compound.

I understand here in the UK tyre choices are limited. The German manufacturer Heidenau produce a 2.75 x 17 tyre, mildly knobbly pattern. Anyone know of these or tried them? MYMOTOTPARTS of Doncaster sell them.

Rear seems to have plenty of room, I’m 170, plus 75# kid on the rack, 30 pack and a gallon of milk in the basket are fine….

170 + 75 + (30 * 0.75) + 8.6 + the basket itself = 276 lb. That's over the GVWR for the bike so if the 3" fits with that it's reasonable to say that there are no issues at all.
