I'm currently at 80 mostly full-throttle miles. I guarantee there won't be nearly the glitter in the oil that was in my first Ural oil change.
Well the Trail oring wasn't in stock. Had to pay more for the Grom one. Small price to pay to take care of the motor.
Will have to order a handful of them up for next time.

That is one downside to having a bike that just started getting delivered. It was out of stock online everywhere I looked, as well. I'll just change the oil and not the o-ring the first time. It isn't like it is absolutely necessary. I'll test that theory

Just did my first oil change. Slightly nerve racking for no apparent reason. So, to clarify, everyone is checking levels on stand with the front tire on the ground? I just clocked over 100 miles. 850ml added with new filter as well.

Folks, I don't understand why Honda requires oil filter change at every second oil change. Why would they want new, clean, oil to be filtered through an old dirty filter?

Changing filter and oil at every service seems more logical.

They're balancing burden and operating costs with the longevity of how many miles they expect the filtration to be suitable for. Honda also do not expect you to pull the right side crank case cover and clean the oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter with each of the oil change intervals they've recommended in the maintenance schedule. Changing oil can be thought of as dilution. The owner's manual for a 2023 lists a spec of 1.0 L oil capacity for a newly assembled engine, but 0.85 L after draining & engine oil filter change. That means there's approximately 0.15 L of old oil expected to remain in circulation and be diluted by new oil. Unless you have dirty riding conditions, they're saying the filter is still doing its job at 4k miles as long as you change the oil it should be good for another 4k miles of filtration.
Your logic makes sense too, as a matter of preference you could replace the filter each time if you want to.

The oil filter was added to the 2023 model CT125 (JA65) on the right side of the engine. There is not a typical disposable paper element oil filter on the older model years (2020-2022, JA55), those just have a centrifugal filter and a filter screen inside the crankcase cover.

Here's a video of @BaldRider changing the filter on a USA 2023 (JA65) CT125:

It's not just Honda, a lot of manufacturer's are recommending that now. Oil change intervals have increased as well. Today's oils are *much* better then they used to be

I just ordered all of the things I need to get the first oil changes out of the way. On my '23 I will change the oil as soon as I get everything delivered. I want to get the magnetic plug in there sooner than later (I am that guy🥴). I also went with the Honda HP4S 10-30 oil and of course the oil filter and gaskets suggested by you guys.

I will be picking my wife's '22 up with 1200 miles next week. I know it does not have a filter, or does it? I read somewhere about a screen that has to be changed or cleaned.

Thank you

All of the Honda Trail engines have an engine oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter inside the right crankcase cover that are a bit more involved to clean but not necessary to be cleaned at every oil change interval. The 2023 model (JA65) just has a replaceable paper element filter in addition to those. Each owner's manual has a "Maintenance Schedule" section in it that details Honda's recommendations for when to clean/replace each.

@QuantiQualification has a video documenting the work necessary to get to and clean the oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter. There are a lot of different tricks to getting the crankcase cover back on if you don't have a second set of hands available to help like he does in the video:

I see K&N has an oil filter that fits this engine (KN-117)... any reason to believe it's any better than the OEM filter? There is very little difference in price. I don't think I have it in me to change the oil, and not change the filter... was thinking of maybe changing my ways, but then at my age... probably not. Unless there is suggestive guidance otherwise, I'll just stick with the HONDA OEM oil.

Did you ever find out why the dip stick is reading low? I just did an oil change using the manual spec 0.8L and it reads below the low line on the stick. I'm not screwing in the dipstick when taking the reading, as per the manuals instructions.
I also called the dealership and they don't have an answer for me.
I ended up putting a bit more oil in, up to 0.9L. I can't imagine that will be an issue.

Thanks, Ryan
I did the same thing. I know you are not supposed to overfill it, but I figure a little over is better than a little under.

There's a range on the dipstick so you should be able to target having the oil level be neither below the lower level or above the upper level.

Honda doesn't have a magnetic oil plug. Add extra oil to your order. Or maybe add Honda chain lube.
