Oil Temperature Range?

Only have a few hundred miles on my bike and I assumed everything was ok. I installed an OPMID gauge with the stock sensor and took off on my first test run and set in the P-Obd temp mode. Based on the OPMID temperature info in the instructions, it says the 125 could get up to 320F?? and the chart goes up to 356f (180c), I went up a route I have been before (4 miles up hill dirt road at 15-20mph) and it went up to 340F-so I stopped, cooled down, turned around and came home. On flats it seems to run 270-280f. Oil level is just below full and air temp is 80f. Are these normal temperatures? They just seem high to me.

Had same experience today too. I took both bikes out for a run with my nephew. I am running the OPMID P-P2 custom program and got a red temp light that max'd at 250F at end of run of 20 miles coming back up the mountain. Its a 500 foot climb in about a half mile and wide open in 3rd I was able to get 35mph all the way up. Forget 4th. Nephew, who is new to bike, and first time on it, tried 4th gear on the way up and wound up at 10 mph wide open and had to pull over to let cars by about 3/4 way up. Restarted up and stayed in 3rd to top. He also got the high temp warning light with temp that max'd at 265F. Took a while for temps to calm down and light go out once we got flat and running again. The P-P2 program is a combination of averages of temps taken at different locations during actual testing of engine by OPMID maker that include temp at heat sensor, temp of oil and temp of heat radiating from cylinder with averages weighted towards oil temp at the upper ranges of operation and the heat sensor during start and warm up. The P-Obd is the temp at the heat sensor only if I'm reading its program description correctly and reports the highest temps of all programs and is the default setting of the OPMID out of the box.

I also bumped up gear shift green shift up warning (2.1) RPM up to 6500 and the (2.2) red light to 7500. We ran wide open for about 5 miles on two sections but they were flat and got no lights other than the green shift up from 4th gear (unfortunately there isn't a 5th). Seems temp is sensitive to high load and low speed. Also seems these bikes do not like steep hills at any speed over 30ish and low speeds seem to allow heat build up around cylinder due to lack of adequate air flow? I could see a better (more flow) oil pump and maybe a fin external cooler like you can get for Monkey and GROM if the oil temp is a problem that requires a fix here where I will be riding. They purred along just fine on flat to rolling hills in the forest and fields but mountains not so much.

This is a mass produced engine that is sold by the 10’s (100’s) of thousands around the world. With oil changes probably 50 years of life…. Many many miles to be expected, it’s not a precision instrument.
Information is a double edged sword, I over analyze my sprinter motor home but let the ct go. My 1975 ct is still kicking and I’ve never seen a temp on it. I change the oil every few years.

Concur with engine assessment. I had a SL-125, with the great grand daddy of the CT-125 engine. In 1973 I used to commute from east of Simmons army airfield to 82nd division row both summer and winter (10 miles one way?) running wide open until crossing Hwy 210 into troop areas. Never had a problem with heat, speed yes, nothing else. I used to motor cross that bike stock on the drop zones and won a 3rd place one time since I walked it across a knee deep creek when ever-one else in my class (stock 100-175 cc) tried to ride at speed across and drowned their engines out or crashed. I only weighed 145lbs then not the 220lbs that is now trying to get the CT over 55mph.....

i had a standalone oil temp gauge on my grom, and it was VERY hotrodded never saw much over 240-260F oil temps and i can guarantee i worked that motor harder than the trail sees.. id take that reading with a big grain of salt.
