I found the Shinko SR241s to be okay on pavement other than grooves like construction or rain grooves, or metal grate bridges. They tramline on those and the faster you go the more speed wobble they respond with. If you can avoid those surfaces, they're okay. If you run them at top speed on pavement the knobs wear down very quickly and will eventually start chunking off. That "trials" type of tire would still be my go-to for pavement in the winter where there is snow, but for warm weather riding on pure pavement the OEM tires or Michelin City Extras are my preference. Gotta find the balance of what fits your riding, and unless your riding is limited that's going to require some compromise for tires.

How are the 241s on pavement? I’ve had block tread trials universals on other bikes; I found them to be great off-road, but way too squirrelly on pavement, to the point of being scary. I have Shinko 244 dual-sport tires on my Yamaha XT250, and they are a good compromise, way better on the road. So how are the 241s when you get frisky on pavement?

I lightly touched on it in the review, but to go deeper:

I think there's 3 aspects to pavement performance I feel

1st is weight over stock IRCs. The extra weight has quite a bit more gyro, initial turn in is slower for sure. I've gotten used to it no problem. Obviously these bikes are only 250lbs, so tire gyro has quite an effect.

2nd is how bendy they are. They might be 4-ply, but that tread and even sidewall really bend. Some people say "like riding on sand" to me it's just like riding on low tires. Although, once you get past the initial rubber bending, they are very stable. Once the tire loads, and bends, and is set, then they are rock solid feeling. I like the immediate feeling of stock, but I got used to the cushy feeling

3rd is tread. Like dmonkey says, grooved pavement is a killer on these. The soft little lugs love to tramline as they are very soft, and fairly similar in size to the grooves.

"Squirrelly" isn't correct, but also not wrong at all. They do wishy-washy as much as the lugs are tall, but they hit the limit of stretch and you feel that grip and 4-ply.

The not straight molding/mounting is a bit of a pain, but it's not as bad as my bent rear wheel lol

I've been so pleased with the Shinko 244 dual-sport for my mixed use on my XT250, I think I will try them on my CT125 when I replace tires – in 2.50 size

The only issue you might run into is load rating. The 244 in 2.50-17 is only a 38 load rating, or 291 Lbs per tire. Depending on how much you ride with all your gear and accessories added to bike you might be pushing the limit on them.

I do wonder about this

I mean conventional wisdom says safety margin of 2 is good, but even at a 38 that's 291 lbs. The bike with me and no cargo would be something like 215 a tire (50-50 assumption which isn't correct). Cutting it close, but technically doable. I wonder if the rear tire loading has to do with passenger ratings in other countries.

I would be ok with 2.75 on rear and a 2.5 on front I think personally

Problem is you can't find that tread pattern in 2.75. So you would have mismatched tires (if that matters to you).
I think you would be ok with the 2 tires weight max being 582 lbs, keep in mind though that usually is max pressure, not riding pressure. Bike wet is 256lbs I believe so that leaves you with 326lbs.
I agree I think you would be fine but its just something I was pointing out not knowing your weight plus any extra gear you have on you/bike.
If you do this I would like a follow up just to see how it holds please!

I currently have the 241s in 2.75, it would be neat to have a 244 for sure though

Although for me I was talking 241 in 2.75 rear and 2.5 front
