Potential silly question but…

What happens if you 100% run her dry of gas. Am testing the theoretical range. Have about 450 -500km (300 miles ish) of a mix of fire trails and single track. Quite remote. Not expecting to see anyone. About 11L onboard but want to run the main tank dry on a shakedown run to see just how long that last bar lasts under conditions similar to the longest leg of the trip -300 miles between fuel stops.

I’ve ran my old CT110 dry a few time (accidentally). A few kicks and she’s good, but not sure with these new fangled fuel injected bikes. Do I just refill, thumb the starter and that’s it? Or is there some sort of primming procedure?

Cheers guys!

I'm going to run mine dry to check milage and just how much of the 1.4 gal. it pulls from the tank. With FI engines 2 or 4 wheel I will cycle the key switch a few times if they were run dry. When you trun the key the pump builds pressure to the FI. So doing this a few times will make certain fuel under pressure is there before cranking the engine.

Yes some pumps don't like to be run dry....or even in a nearly dry tank, as the fuel cools them. Low fuel level could create extra heat build up. So I've heard!?

Yes if your fuel pump is in the tank the fuel cools the pump. I don’t think it is on these though. It is on my vstrom. I never run it under a gallon.

I have 3 rotopax. I have 1 1.5 gal and 2 1.75 gal. Then I have my bagger 1 gal tank that fits between my legs on that luggage rack. I'll run the tank dry and eat on the side of the road ensuring that I don't have to stop at a gas station for 500 miles ensures a speedy travel on a slow bike.

if they are run low that can overheat in the tank, some volvos and gms are notorious for this. however,,, i def wouldnt sweat it on the trail, at all.

So, I ran mine dry today, or very close anyway. Ran it till it was spittering and sputtering at 30 mph, dropped back on the throttle and nursed it along for another 1/4 mile or so, found a nice place to pull over and did so. The engine did not die yet and sat and idled nicely, even revved up without a miss. My goal was to see how far I could ride it on a tank full, not see if I could run the pump dry. I figured close enough and shut it off. I could see a splash of fuel in the tank when I rocked the bike. So it may have sputtered along a little farther, don't know, don't care. I dumped in exactly 1 gal. and away it went like new again. Rode about 1 mile and squeezed in another .532 gal. So Honda's spec of 1.4 gal. capacity is right if you just fill it and don't put it on the center stand and get every drop you can in it.

For the test. I just filled it up on the side stand like normal, didn't stuff ever last drip in. Set the trip meter. Rode "normal" for ME. That's a few WFO starts, plenty of hard braking and hard acceleration. Several miles at 50 mph, but mostly in the 30 to 40 mph range. 75% paved backroads, 25% gravel, no stop and go city riding. I'm in IL. so a few hills but generally pretty flat. Stock tires and gearing. And the little CT was packing 205 lb. of flesh and blood, plus gear.
What I learned. The fuel level indicator (can't call it a gauge) hit 3 bars at 86 miles, 2 bars at 106, 1 bar at 125, and that bar started flashing at 133 miles. It sputtered out of gas at 163.

Ang from SomeGuyRides ran his dry/low multiple times. And if you do break it it's a $107 mistake, so still not that bad.
