I got a quote on a New Honda Trail 125 - $3,899 PLUS $1,298 for freight and set up. That seemed high to me... Thoughts?

Yep high, mine was $5300 otd with bs fees from the dealer. I emailed Honda and was told they can charge any fee the dealer wants.
They started at $5800 but I then explained my off road advocacy for 30 years in town, the dealership was 2 years old and a chain. I think they just wanted to get rid of me so they took $500 off. Besides the recall my bike will never be there and i will never buy anything from them…

Same as AZ. I called the dealer, they had one in route with no deposit on it. So I asked for pricing and they told me $5780 or something. I told them that seemed high, so he went back to his manager and they said that actually the freight costs weren't correct, so the real out the door price I will be paying is $5300. I'm sure they were just playing games to try and get a little extra out of someone, but a little pushback got them back to a realistic price.

High but typical and normal these days. I paid about 4900 for mine out the door in NC last year. You can offer less, I did, they started at over $5100 so I got a tad knocked off.

I paid 5075 out the door including tags etc Feb of 21, and they had held it for me, didn't even hit the floor they called me when the crate came in. I cant complain about that. I'm not going to squabble and lose a purchase over 50-100 bucks, they have always treated me well. did i bargaina bi and get about 100 bucks off what they originally offered? yes. some you do better on, some you don't. Like holding the 1st trail order for me, and back when I pre ordered my grom as well, and my ktm390 when they came out.. etc. I've bought 8 or 9 new bikes over the years at this dealership, one was my cb1100 i got brand new for 6400 OTD, so it goes both ways. this was opposed a dealer in cht that wanted 9500 for the exact same bike. I'll never go in there again but go to their open houses and eat their bbq though. :ROFLMAO: I know there are out layer places where they can't charge taxes ad fees on stuff under 5k new on vehicles but that's a rare, rare exception. also, I'm not in a low income area so that comes into play as well. things to consider.

Mine was $5053.14 out the door in Colorado Aug 2021, and the county taxes I paid on it were for where I live, higher than where the dealership was. Just figure that if you don't want it at that price, the supply is so low that the dealership won't have a hard time finding someone else to buy it. That's unfortunately the way it goes. Be sure to check oil, tire pressure, and chain slack before riding off the lot. Some dealerships run on sales and not service, they'll send a bike out the door with those things being out of spec. These are a few of the reasons that newer car and motorcycle manufacturers (mostly electric ones) have been fighting to sell their vehicles directly to customers avoiding the old laws that benefit and require dealerships.

$5299 OTD was the quoted price in Seattle, price checked December 19 last year when they had received a single bike. The dealer specifically mentioned that the costs would go up by $100 as of January 1.

EDIT: Lake City Powersports was the dealer.
EDIT 2: Tax in Seattle is ~10.25%

From the Honda site:

The "official" price is $3,899+$300=$4,299. Plus tax, document fees, etc. Typical doc fees are around $300. "Dealer Prep" fees are 100% extra cheese for the dealer. I'm not sure about Honda, but even some manufacturer's quoted freight fees are not always legitimately on the invoice. What we're seeing right now in the power sports industry as a whole is the law of supply and demand. Low supply, high demand equals surcharges and extra fees. Capitalism at work, nothing much you can do about it. If you want it, you're going to pay.

I've been looking for another ATV the past few weeks, and depending on dealer, you can find places that advertise "no freight/prep" and mean it. I priced the same model Suzuki at more than one dealer. Most had similar freight/prep, and one lonely one was like, "it's not on our invoice so we don't charge either." Same thing from a couple of CFMoto dealers I called. Same exact ATV, $1,200 difference due to freight/prep. I called the $1,200 higher dealer back (he was 1.5 hours closer) and told them the other guy doesn't charge freight/prep and he simply said, "Our fright/prep fees are non-negotiable." So I thanked him and put a deposit down with the other guy.

No "deals" to be had right now in the industry, pay to play is the name of the game right now.

how do you think dealerships make any money? part of the process and overhead. my local place makes about 500 per bike profit.

Yep. Also figure these dealerships have been facing low inventory. The markup isn't just price gauging because they can, it's also to make up for that they're getting a trickle of product to sell and still need to make payroll and keep the lights on. My hometown Yamaha dealership went 6+ months without receiving any new vehicles from Yamaha, they stayed afloat with merch, accessories, upping their shop labor rate, selling Chinese products they could get their hands on (SSR Motorsports type stuff), and now that they've got new Yamaha vehicles in they're all marked up too.

Would be great to have the option to have it delivered in the crate and keep the $500 or so IMO. One of my neighbors bought a street legal Hawk 250 online right before my CT125 came in and did just that. I'm not saying there isn't value in a dealership, it's just different value for different people, bikes, and situations.

where i work we sell solely thru distribution, trust me they earn their percentage. last thing I want to do is deal with an end user. I do on occasion... but for the most part, no way. i have too much other stuff to deal with. I'm sure Honda feels the same way.

delivery is shipping costs to the dealership, not to your house. and yes, its more expensive the further from the arrival port that you are. just fyi. thats a good deal, Bullwinkle.

For me I'm going to be discussing it with the dealer that if they can cut me some slack on the fees, I'll buy as much gear as I can through them. The gear I have is old and worn out and could use a refresher. If they'll cut me a discount and have decent gear I'll get as much gear I can through them as possible; if not, I'll get it from my local guys instead and carry it with me to the dealer. I don't know what the markup is on gear, but it'll change the $5k sale into a $6k-7k sale if they have everything I want, and be WAY more convenient.

I paid $5,390 out the door in Klamath Falls, Oregon, no sales tax, no registration, since I was bringing it back to California. The 125's are so rare at dealers, that if you want one, you pay what they're asking. I'm happy to have found one, and they were very nice at the dealership.
