Problem ordering from Webike

Hey All

I figured I'd ask in here since I know a bunch of you have ordered in the past from Webike. I've been trying to place an order for a few days now, and continually receive a "Communication Error" when I attempt to place my order and use a credit card as my payment method.

Have any of you run into this issue, or is this just a 'me' problem? Did you have a solution? Webike can't seem to answer what the issue is.

I actually ordered a part from them a few weeks ago, but I used PayPal and it went through fine. I just don't want to do that this time around because its a large order and PayPal whacks you a large % fee if the transaction is in foreign currency (Japanese Yen).

Yeah, same here using a credit card. I did manage to get an order through using PayPal, though.

I've ordered from them a lot but always used PayPal and accepted the currency conversion fee. In general online I try to limit as few sites as possible to actually having my CC. PayPal is a pain and expensive, but it's good for that.

Quick update…

Webike got back to me and said, essentially, “Visa and Master Card payments are no longer accepted, except for 3D Secure payments, so please consider using a card that supports the 3D Secure system or paying with PayPal.”

Not exactly sure how that all works, but I did figure out a workaround to still use a credit card with PayPal and avoid the foreign conversion markup for anyone interested:

Checkout with PayPal, but use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees as payment source (not a bank account or existing PayPal balance). Before confirming the purchase, change the currency that the purchase is in from USD (default) to Japanese Yen. That way, PayPal doesn’t do it’s own currency conversion and up-charge you an extra 5% on top for it. It’s simply a transaction in Yen. Instead, it leaves the conversion (and any fees) up to the credit card company you chose, which with the right card will be zero.
