PSA - For people mounting smart phones to your bike

I have an Iphone 13 pro and had been using the Ram Mounts X grip to mount it to my handlebars. It worked fine. But I recently got the Tackform enduro series mount that is more sturdy.

Not sure when it happened, but my camera on my iphone broke. It started making noises when in video mode, and would record wavy weird footage.

Then it hit me. I have heard lots of folks saying that mounting newer smartphones to motos will mess up the cameras. And I'm certain thats what happened. The high frequency vibration messes up the internal camera mechanical parts. Apple replaced my phone under warranty, but I will not be mounting my phone to my bike again. Very annoying problem, as I now have no navigation.

Just wanted to share before someone else ruins their expensive phone.

How does the Quad Lock with the vibration dampener work? Does it prevent enough vibration from getting to the phone for it to no longer be an issue? I just purchased my Trail 125 and the phone mount was going to be my first accessory. I certainly don’t want to ruin an expensive phone though.

I thought about giving that one a try. It's expensive but cheaper than a phone. Definitely read some reviews though, I've seen mixed ratings. The thing that turned me off of that one is the case. I don't want to have to use their specific weird case.

Quad Lock does make a device they will attach to a non specific case or directly to the phone. It attaches with 3m VHB tape. Very strong stuff. Just can’t use it on rubber or soft touch surfaces. So far, the reviews seem overwhelmingly positive. Which also makes me suspicious. It is quite expensive for a mount. But certainly much less so than a phone. Or even to repair a phone in some instances.

get a shitty cheap phone for that. my unlocked galaxy A11 was 200 bucks new from best buy no worries using on a bike or destroying it.
Please consider these words of wisdom. ^^^

Our main phones will be the most important tool you can have in the event of an accident. If you can get a beater for the handlebars you'll have your good phone ready to go when grandma looks right at you then pulls out anyway.
There are some map apps that will let you download maps by state so you don't even need a cellular connection. If it's an issue you can tether to your smartphone.

For street riding Beeline Moto has my interest, it syncs with an App on your phone (which can be in your pocket) and displays simplified GPS on its screen. They unfortunately don't have a mount for it that charges the device while mounted, though it is supposed to get up to 30 hours battery life. Having watched YouTube videos demoing the device, it doesn't look useful for offroad riding.

A former coworker of mine has one of these and they work pretty well in most areas. However, I will definitely say it will NOT work for the offroad riding. We have some areas that we ride through that have some quick left, quick right sort of situations going, and he really struggles with navigating on those. To be honest, it really felt like it was designed for a bicycle, where the slower speeds allowed you to not have the best "right, then quick left, followed by a quick right" experience because each subsequent turn is several seconds apart. On a motorcycle, things just happen too quickly.

Aside from those weird places where there are a lot of turns in short succession, which unfortunately is quite common where I live, the navigation of it worked really well.

RE: The quadlock case, I would recommend against using their case. Get the stick on one and use whatever case you want, it's way cheaper and it either works just as well or better than the standard case. I am also using the stabilization jig on my quadlock mount, because I have an iPhone, but my iPhone is in need of replacement so I'm going to "test" whether it will break with the image stabilization or not.

While I do use a Quadlock on my bike, I only do it for "last mile" navigation. For the most part, I'm old school: I memorize the route, and I only use my phone to help me find the actual location because sometimes the numbers are hard to read on buildings.
