It's winter in NZ right now but it doesn't stop us riding on frosty roads.

How do the new trails keep up compared to the old with hi/lo range? Im guessing you guys are all regeared for sprockets anyway but curious if you notice a major difference having them side by side
The dual speeders can potentially climb steeper stuff but at a slower speed. Traction becomes the limiting factor. Most new bikes have at least a 13 on the front but some like me have 15/45 which gives 3:1 which is slightly lower again. There's not much I can't get up. There's also the person factor. Who wants to try the silliest steep climb. How do the new trails keep up compared to the old with hi/lo range? We do mostly ride to our silly rides so can't gear them down too far. We'd never get there and hold up traffic a bit much, even though we try to always go by back roads.@KiwiGravelRoadieRick 15/45 is pretty much same gearing as the 13t depending on year (JA55 had 39 rear would also be 3.00, JA65 38 would be 2.92). Im surprised you aren't running 14/45 or even 13/45 in that terrain.
I do have a 14 laying around@KiwiGravelRoadieRick I just did 550 mile trip with 13/42 gearing (which would be the same as you doing 14/45) and I was still getting on average 50mph. 59-60MPH down steep hills, 38MPH up really steep hills, but mostly around 50-53MPH flat.
Try it out, super easy to change front sprocket on these bikes takes about 10 minutes to swap and adjust chain.
Do you use a rev counter on your bike? It would be interesting to see the revs in those top gear speeds.@KiwiGravelRoadieRick I just did 550 mile trip with 13/42 gearing (which would be the same as you doing 14/45) and I was still getting on average 50mph. 59-60MPH down steep hills, 38MPH up really steep hills, but mostly around 50-53MPH flat.
