Some Guy Rides: a CT125 across America

I just wanted to call out this series of videos (still in progress at the moment, though I think his trip is now done of course.) It's not the most professional or action packed series of motorcycling vlogs you've ever seen but i found myself sucked in because it seems like such an unfiltered look at what a trip like this would be like for an amateur. somebody who hasn't been motorcycling all over the world his whole life. somebody without a film crew support. somebody without buckets of money to spend. everything constantly fails. sometimes the road is harsh and boring. you can literally hear him slowly losing his mind as the solo riding days stretch on. I never watched anything that was so close to what it's really like doing this kind of stuff. Of course, the added bonus is that he's doing it on a CT125!

anyway, a lot of you probably already know about these videos but for those who don't:

My heart: You should do that.
My internet search history: You know, I've seen a lot of these bikes popping up over in those eastern states...
My wallet: If you camp a lot it'll barely cost anything and you already have all the camping gear.
My brain: F**k you guys. This is type 2 fun for sure.
The others, collectively: YOU SHOULD DO IT.

Needless to say I've really been enjoying the series, and I want to do it. Maybe not 3 flats in one day or pushing a heavily loaded bike over mountain passes at 14k ft, but everything else seems good. One other thing that goes with it is that I'm reminded of the things that make me happy, the riding I enjoy and that I want out of the CT125 and the things I'm currently missing in my life. It's like... hardship, but not too much hardship is ok lol.

In Ep 16, it's just... beautiful, boring desert scenery, nothing terribly hard and definitely achievable on a Monkey, but stuff that is tough enough that people in passenger cars leave it alone. "Dirt lite" riding. Sure, I hate deep sand too, but that video was the one in the series that I enjoyed the most.

a ridge overlooking Lake Guntersville, AL.
Watched one of the series last night. Dec. 8 release Ep 19. They where going across some very flat area in IDAHO and both dumped within 5 minutes on a dirt road. Both bikes had same damage. The foot brake pedal got folded back 180 degrees on the first and 90 degrees on the second. They drove both in that condition to next town and got Honda shop it reheat and fold back. Conclusion of mine is have spare, like for the shifter too, but looks the brake pedals are very durable but vulnerable to a right side dump. One of the bikes had a brush guard and it didn't prevent the damage.

I watched the series and what an adventure! At my age I just wouldn't be able to handle those really rough areas. Those days are behind me now. With that said, I think it would be cool to haul the bike out to some of those beautiful, remote areas that are a little less challenging and simply get lost, feel the wind, and take it all in. Just having this bike is an adventure for me. I can't wait for better weather in order to get more acquainted with this machine.

Yep, I've watched it all. Great adventure, I plan on same ride in couple years, but on my xt550. The dude can talk though, he said more in one episode to himself than I talk in a month! Overall very fun to watch.
Yeah, I loved the banter.

I stumbled across Ang and Ugly Little Home Fry while trying to discover more about the Hunter Cub, after 10 minutes of a random episode I went to the first one...
Turns out it made good viewing while playing amateur radio.
Probably the final and conclusive proof I needed to go ahead and buy one. Honda should be using this as part of their advertising..... Honda "Yes, it really is this good"

Yes, it's strangely addictive. I don't know if you've come to the banter with his ass, the boss and talks about the wedge salad... so funny! He's got quite an imagination and a good story teller. Btw, you need one of these bikes!

I used to do a lot of cycling so when his ass called it brought back some painful memories. I had to Google wedge salad as I didn't have a clue, kind of obvious once I found out. Very much enjoyed the randomness of his mind when alone in his own head for hours on end, makes me feel a little more comfortable knowing I'm not the only lunatic on this tiny little of ours.
I do need one don't I.

You may need to search a bit and drive a distance to finally get one. Some folks are going to ridiculous lengths to get their hands on one of these little red machines. I found mine on this forum in the classifieds. A guy was offering a 2022 model with 1200 miles on it. Bike was still in warranty. Warranty is transferrable. He was just a four hour drive from my home. I drove up there to look at the bike. It was pristine. Nary a scratch on it. I gave him a $1000.00 check to hold the bike and returned a few weeks later in my van with a friend to help. We ramped the bike up into the van, strapped it down and away we went. That was in December. With winter here, I've only been able to ride it a few times. I'm okay with that. I knew better than to pass on it as they are just so hard to come by. The reason some buyers sell the newer bikes is because they mistakenly purchased a bike that wasn't right for them. Some buyers wanted more of a road bike or just something bigger and more powerful. Personally, I'm a country backroads and trails kind of guy. So this bike is perfect for my intended use. You'll find that a number of individuals on this forum do have larger bikes of various types. With this said, they love their CT 125's. Good luck, I hope you find one! Keep us posted.

Mine is currently in a container at Hamburg docks, another week or so it should have arrived in Blighty. Then there is all the paperwork, red tape, type approval, registration, plus something I'm probably not aware of. Thankfully a very friendly and helpful importer is sorting all that malarkey out for me. Then I just need to get it on to the Isle of Man.
To secure one with the importer a pretty substantial deposit was required but as demand is very high it's to be expected. The turn around time on the order is better than Honda actually managed when I ordered a C125 Super Cub last year, that took 6 months to arrive.

Yeah, you need one. Most fun bike I've ever owned. I plan on combining my radio hobby with riding this year and I always carry an HT with me when riding alone.

The Isle of Man sounds like the ideal place for this bike!

Hi Glenn,

That huge rack looks like it will lend itself well to moving radio equipment around. We have around 100 miles of coastline covering 360° of the compass and our highest point is Snaefell at 2,037 ft ASL. So the potential to explore and play radio at the same time is very tempting. If you hear MD0RTZ calling CQ, give me a shout. =)

If you were going to set out and design an all round do everything bike from the ground up for the Isle of Man it would come out looking exactly like a Hunter Cub. About the only thing it won't do is give you a sub 16m 42.778s lap of the mountain course. And oddly enough Honda have something for that too, we'll ignore that it was last set on a BMW however.

I knew this isn't a CT125 but it's a Honda and it's on the Isle of Man so two out of three isn't bad. As soon as I have a filmed lap on the Hunter Cub I'll upload it here, promise.

Basically just bike porn but it shows the island off really well, if a little quickly, try not to blink. o_O

Bringing this back on topic, Some Guy Rides is a great advert for Honda and for motorcycle adventure touring in general. Ang shows that you don't need to mortgage to house to buy a BMW that's half as big as the house you just mortgaged and 20% heavier. I've still got a lot of his videos to watch, I'm looking forward to just sitting back with a cuppa and putting my feet up for a couple of hours pure indulgence.
