Stall in traffic

Can't find anything in the trouble shooting section of the owner's manual, and I didn't see any threads here related to this--today on the way home from work, my Trail 125 stalled when I went to pull out from a stop light. Immediately started back up and continued home without further incident. The side stand was up, I looked at the wires, all of them appear securely connected. Is it possible that this is a one off malfunction, or perhaps something that will keep happening and need some attention? Could it be from running too hot--it is hot here in Houston and I was in a lot of start and stop traffic.

I'm not saying it's impossible to overheat a CT125 because you can overheat anything if you try hard enough.... but that's the point: you have to really trying, near the limits of the bike's engine.

There's two kinds of stalls, the kind where the engine just cuts out, and the kind where something isn't releasing when it should be and causes the engine to labor (RPMs drop) and then cut out. Which kind of stall did you have?

Overheating engines feel different too. It's hard to describe, but if you're used to it running a certain way and then it starts to... idk, like the throttle response suddenly becomes a lot quicker compared to what you're used to, that kind of different. If you suspect the bike is overheating, do something to give it a break, even that something is that you have to pull over for a bit. In my hometown, lane splitting for 2-3 minutes would solve it, but that's not legal in Texas.

EDIT: Also, when was your last oil change and how is your oil level today?

Yeah, it just cut out-- was idling at a light, seemingly OK, I went to start out, opened the throttle and it was not running. It started right back up. I must have pushed it into neutral so that the starter would work, but I don't remember doing so.

Oil level looked OK. I haven't done an oil change yet. Still only at about 350 miles. I had thought that the side stand might be down a little, but it didn't seem to be. (When I took the Basic Rider Course, one of the guys kept stalling because he had a bike with a loose stand, and it would always stall and wouldn't restart until he moved the side stand back to where it wasn't activating the kill switch.)

But the ride home yesterday was just not fun, a lot of traffic, a lot of stupid, then getting stuck at a rail crossing with a train going east, and then a west bound train came on the opposite track.

Yah, that bike is a bit too new to be having issues with it of any sort, the only thing I did by that point was the automatic clutch adjustment. I've had a loose stand / loose switch before where it rattles around and randomly kills your engine but not on bikes with less than 40,000 km on them. I did have "friends" who reach out with their feet and kick the stand down a tad right as the light goes green...

350 mi is enough to affect the oil level if you're WOT'ing the entire time, but that wasn't the case either. And if the oil level is ok and fairly new, it's less prone to overheating. So you've got another strike against the possibility of it being caused by overheating. The bike is still under warranty, so if you find it happening more and eventually get a good reproduction going, that's a dealership problem.

probably jus an FI hiccup. these bikes do adjust the map continually, so, i wouldn't worry too much about it. i ride in 90-100 degree temps quite a bit, it's not overheating.

I have had this issue too.
but only twice.
both times, hot days, i was kinda thinking i bumped the side stand or something but i did start back up with no prob
I do ride the bike every day to work in any weather (hot FL heat) and was thinking about adding a oil cooler.
so i installed a temp gauge just to see how hot that little bugger gets,
I'm seeing running under way temps of 160 - 200 and up to 230 sitting in traffic.
i work on diesel engines in my work, some air cooled, that seems about the norm.

This happened to me..I looked behind sprocket cover and the wire running to kickstand rubs up against engine. Wonder if it's getting too hot ?? Poor place for it imo

You can eliminate the side stand safety switch. Just be aware that it's a safety risk to do so. I eliminated it on my 2021 Honda Trail 125 and haven't missed it.

Had my bike stall in traffic for the 2nd time yesterday. Went to pull off from a light and it stalled instead of going.

It was a warm day but i've ridden during hotter times.
I know I didn't hit anything on accident so I'll check the side stand cable when I get a chance.
I personally like the feature so I won't be doing an elimination.
