Strange rattle/noise diagnosed

Every once in a while I would hear a noise that sound like rattle but more mechanical. Went through bike looking for any loose bits and nothing. Today I discovered occasionally my heel would come in contact with kick starter causing a bad sound. So have to be more careful with right foot. Or maybe I will install it a couple notches down on shaft if it happens regularly. Just thought it might help someone else scratching their head

I believe I have the same rattle. It sounded like a loose washer rattling against the skid plate. I did find one bolt that needed tightening and the rattle seemed to improve a bit.
In my case the rattle is intermittent but I've found that it completely stops when I take my foot off the right peg and starts again when I put it down on the peg again. I hadn't considered the kick start but will now.

Thanks for the heads up.

Foot position is a funny thing on these bikes. I did not like the original position of the shifter, so I moved it up one spine. No matter how I stand or sit, I never come close to contacting the kickstarter. 5' 10", size 10 shoes.

I came across this thread looking to see if folks are having kick starter removal difficulties, seems not but mine just doesn't want to come off with bolt removed and even wedging a screwdriver blade in the pinch bolt gap to open it up. The starter is rocking from side to side but not coming forward, did I miss something?

Mone came right off so there shouldn't be anything else. Bolt did have to be completely out. I'd try a small puller if you can get one instead of risking damage to the shaft using more primitive methods.

Yep I'm aware that the hands of a neanderthal and knowledge of a learner is not a good combination. I haven't got a puller so giving it a good soak in penetrating oil

Just took the jaws of a 19mm wrench behind it and some gentle levering and off she came. I greased the splines to avoid in future.

i had the same issue on my 2023 trail. same solution, rotated the kick start a few clicks back and the kick starter is now below the foot peg.

I have to say storing it with re-useable zip ties under the rear rack sounds a good idea - no need to keep the retaining bolt in situ, just slide it on for those very rare occasions it is needed and treat it as an addition to the tool kit …
