Quest for fire ride II
Had a small fire a few weeks ago to the South of the house on the Oregon side of the Columbia river. A ride to the burn site sounded like fun so after several days of rain and the fire watch app showing it was out plans were formed.
Locating the site and mapping a track was easy via basecamp and OnX, getting there was a different story.
Quest for fire one ended at gated roads or muddy single track trails that I was not going down.
Turned tail for home after a nice day of riding to make more plans.
After a couple days of rain some clearer skies were forecast so...
Trip II started with a foggy ferry ride across the Columbia
IMG_0052.jpeg
Fog lifted as we made our way across, passed by a gravel barge loading up.
IMG_0095.jpeg
Offloaded and headed up into the coast range
IMG_0053.jpeg
Fall colors showing up
IMG_0056.jpeg
IMG_0097.jpeg
Great views along the way.
IMG_0038.jpeg
Wandered through a maze of logging roads and finally stumbled across the burn. More by mistake than by planning but quest fulfilled!
IMG_0066.jpeg
On the way back I had an hour to kill before the next ferry so detoured into Taylorville only to find Tom and Jerry's moto friendly bar.
IMG_0105.jpeg
Fit right in and tuned out to be a good spot for lunch and a beer.
IMG_0086.jpeg
All in all fun day out on the trail!

After a very wet week with almost 3" of rain we had a dry and somewhat sunny day yesterday!
Planned out a 85 mile loop with some nice paved backroads and gravel travel to mix it up.
IMG_0182.jpeg
Made a quick stop at Beaver Creek falls.
Last June vs November
IMG_9645.jpeg
IMG_0151.jpeg
IMG_0156.jpeg
Continuing on I take a short jaunt down a forbidden large timber company logging road. Lots of imposing signs about permits required but I need another bridge picture and know just the place a few miles up the forbidden road.
IMG_0159.jpeg
With that mission accomplished it was off to camp Wilkerson. Forest service camp that caters to the horse crowd with horse stalls, hiking and horse only trails as well as tent camping and a few RV sties.
IMG_0167.jpeg
The wet weather and lush forest create perfect conditions for a large variety of mushrooms.
IMG_0164.jpeg
IMG_0169.jpeg
Some older well maintained structures in the camp.
IMG_0171.jpeg
And my favorite fire truck.
IMG_0172.jpeg
Hit the picture limit!
Another fun day on the backroads and in the woods.

After my first (short) season, I’m probably one of those that sell or trade an accessorized, low mile unit. it’s a blast but not really well suited for central Oregon sand or distances. A compact 4x4 will likely be my financially equivalent option. It’s a ‘22 with 450 miles. Market value means I’ll take a beating :/

Sounds like you need a Jimny, or wait for the new FJ Cruiser...

Nothing too adventurous here, but I did run down to our friends' villa to do some maintenance.

On the way, I noticed a usually closed forest trail was open, so of course had to explore - at least until I met the local dam support crew coming back down the hill... after they chastised me for using the road, they grilled me about the Hunter Cub.

@Kuro Neko
Have enjoyed reading your about your rides also.
I sometimes take for granted what is right out my back door and look at where others venture as exotic travels!

Yeah... me too.

20251116_110715.jpg

With a warm 20C day forecast, I decided to do some forest road exploring on the Hunter Cub.

20251117_102927.jpg

Local tunnel, supposedly haunted because due to its curve, you cannot see either end from the middle, and the spirits are unable to escape.

20251117_103317.jpg20251117_110834.jpg

Stopping to fill my water bottle at a local spring, I was pleased to see another Hunter Cub.

Anniversary Monkey I think.

20251117_120019.jpg

Up one forest road, this abandoned minka has had its roof collapse unfortunately.

20251117_115311.jpg

Interior thatch is unlikely to last very long exposed to the weather.

20251117_115240.jpg

I had thought the calendar would date occupancy waaay back, but it was only from 2011.

20251117_121208.jpg

Typhoon damage has closed many roads, and the clearing crew has left this set of trees which just allow small kei and Cub to sneak under...

Thank you for your pictures and descriptions!

Enjoy!
As I know I like looking at idle pics myself over a cup of coffee at the end of the day...

20251117_122652.jpg

A touge (峠) is a mountain pass, and they are typically scenic, challenging to drive, and often the domain of drifters and others who enjoy a bit of speed.
Amusingly, this forest road had been dubbed the Shiro Kitsune Touge (White Fox Pass), and someone had taken the time to make their own road sign accordingly.

20251117_123051.jpg

The touge started off a disused bridge, and went up and into the deep forest.

20251117_125224.jpg

Some of the road was barely passable to kei, and certainly not full-sized vehicles.

20251117_125318.jpg

The Cub though is perfect, and it was for these types of roads that I purchased one.

20251117_125340.jpg

The White Fox Pass goes up and over a small range in the middle of Boso Hanto, and as well as its great views, it also has a series of handcut tunnels.

20251117_125427.jpg

Cut we imagined during Edo times, to allow the mountain villagers access to homes and hunting areas.

20251117_125549.jpg

One section of the road has many tunnels (I should find on a map, and count I suppose).

20251117_125652.jpg

Some look very imposing.

20251117_125724.jpg

This one is perhaps 100m long.

20251117_131247.jpg

Coming out of the forest, this home was nestled in a little valley, and I liked the kura (storage house) in their front yard.

I don't normally take so many pics, but this run was very pleasant - the weather, the views, the road, the tunnels, the hunters I met clearing their traps, and even two fellow trail riders (one Serow and one Africa Twin).
The guy on the Serow was reluctant to traverse the Road Closed sign and was checking his mapping app for an alternate, but when he saw the Cub sneaking out asked if it was passable, then took my recommendation to proceed...

See ya!

As a followup, I may have found a compromise solution for extended exploration: a Motolug SE single rail trailer. It’s a UK brand that’s truly unique And solves a condo storage issue by breaking down completely.
Most foldable motorcycle trailers are still overkill for hauling a light CT125. Not this one.
Additionally, no issue with a second vehicle cost, maintenance, gas, insurance, parking… Anybody else use a trailer?

Have you thought about something like this:

My Honda CRV hybrid has a 1000 lb tow rating. Hitch loads are generally 10% of the tow rating even though the receiver is rated at 500 lbs.Unibody construction!

Thanks, as I will look at similar for the CX...

I think the road is closed. But conveniently, one little barrier is easily lifted and moved aside to allow Hunter Cubs to pass.

20251129_123614.jpg

I think Jimny can sneak past this tree!

20251129_135906.jpg

The turning leaves across our prefecture are nice.

20251129_141701.jpg

Drink time.

20251129_144257.jpg

Little shrine, up one forest road.

20251129_145055.jpg

More small tunnels.

20251129_152126.jpg

This one was a bit more interesting.

20251129_152137.jpg

Mountain views.

20251129_153621.jpg

Blind corner and another tunnel.

The road home...
