Agreed too; I like all the different perspectives myself.

A recently re-opened rindo was calling...

Again, I was surprised at the number of hand cut and unlined tunnels.

View attachment 13891

Including for the local river and rice field irrigation.

View attachment 13892

One tunnel's approach was very steep.

View attachment 13893

It was also very skinny!

View attachment 13894

On the way home, a more formal tunnel。

This one too, is traversed by normal cars regularly, and features a double-deck outlook - because after many years' operation as foot traffic, they redug the run lower to allow motorized vehicles to use the route too.
This is how it remained.

The bridge on our street...
The Rindo in your area contain many tunnels. Passing each one offers a new perspective, perhaps sunlight filtering through the treetops, the babbling of a stream, or a brief moment of dim, damp light. Riding through them must be very enjoyable I believe.

Yes! This is why I like them so much, as each one feels like you're going to a different place with a different view when you emerge.

First time out after my knee replacement surgery 7 weeks ago.
Did a short 53 mile ride on the Oregon side of the Columbia to explore the North side of a couple islands down the road from the ferry landing in Westport.
Gassed up and ready to head to the ferry.

IMG_0847.jpeg
Then a short ride east gets you on the roads around Kerry island that meander around a series of sloughs which eventually drain into the Columbia.

Old barn is a long way from the Showa-era exuberant futurism! that @Kuro Neko has shared with us.

A local resident stopped in the road to chat about the Honda.
Interesting and friendly individual who has lived in the area for 50 years. Evidently Jones beach, just down the road, is a word class wind and kite surfing meca. Actually hosted some olympic qualifiers back in the 80's and 90's.
All I can say about Jones beach is stay off the sandy access road on the Honda while recovering from knee surgery.

Big diesel that had been mounted onto a stationary platform and rigged to run a chain at some point in its life.

Decided to call it a day and catch the 1:15 ferry back home, on the way out caught a Bald Eagle looking for a meal.
IMG_0862.jpegBeautiful day and good to get out again!

Beautiful day and good to get out again!

That's a glorious looking ride, and I am amazed at the wildlife you've photographed... our tombi are not as impressive as that eagle.
Kyon, shika, and monkeys abound though, and for some reason the Hunter Cub sneaks up on them all a lot easier than when in a car.

Hope the knees are better!

Here, I again went off into the forests looking for old rindo and tunnels.

20260507_132635.jpg

An irrigation tunnel cut to provide water for rice fields.

20260507_134430.jpg
20260507_134449.jpg

This tunnel's entrance was nearly impassable, and once inside it was a little creepy.

20260507_134702.jpg

The other side took some navigation, and had me once again considering I need to carry a handsaw.

The green of summer signals the need to be aware of leaches.

Path down to a river looked interesting, so I went back with a friend.

20260511_115234.jpg

The Acty 4WD can sneak nearly as well as the Hunter Cub.

20260511_120418.jpg20260511_120420.jpg

We came across a long lost kominka in the forest.

20260511_143325.jpg

Much agriculture has water tunnels all over as well.

20260519_125404.jpg

Sad kura and minka in need of some attention.

20260519_130711.jpg

Off alone on another day, a relatively easy forest tunnel.

20260519_130849.jpg

This one was a concern, as I had to test the depth of the water and mud.

20260519_131101.jpg

Confluence of ancient paths, buried well into the forest of Boso Hanto.

I just used rustolium high temperature rattle can paint. I also hit the engine plate as well.
Engine plate, as in sump guard?
How does that look, pics please!?
As, mine looks like this now, and not sure it would benefit from any paint:

My planned attempt at the exhaust heat shields wasn't to be high temp, just this stuff (which seemed to take the heat here, and the Hunter Cub should be on a cooler application):

@Kuro Neko Really enjoy the photos of your rides, the lush forests and small roads with downed trees remind me of this area. No leaches thankfully and tunnels are rare.
There is an old train tunnel about 80 miles on logging roads from the house. Was reading recently that the road into it has been rebuilt so it is now accessible. Would need to pack extra gas and plan for a very long day but would make for an interesting destination.
Thanks again for keeping us posted on your travels!

While I am not a fan of leach bites - as they bleed forever all over everything - the Snakes of Summer are a bit more of a concern.
I've seen a few these last few rides, though mostly rat snakes, and not mamushi (a highly poisonous viper), or similarly aggressive keelback.

I like the sound of packing gas for a long ride, though not sure my bum could survive the distance.
North American logging, rail, and prospecting adventures sound very appealing though.

Really enjoying your pictures. Thank you. So many tunnels! Imagine how many man-hours went into their construction.

From what reading I've done on the tunnels of Boso Hanto, it seems many were dug by locals during the Edo era (as in the men-from-the-village), with the larger ones under government sponsorship as part of the Meiji Restoration.

20260520_143334.jpg20260520_143655.jpg20260520_144402.jpg20260520_150023.jpg20260520_151657.jpg20260520_152916.jpg

This rindo about 15 mins from our minka, has only recently been reopened as it was previously overgrown, and blocked by the falling trees from the 2019 typhoon.
One tunnel, included a side diversion, that like other such digs was likely used as a cool store.

pulled off on the bike path for a photo - beautiful evening for a ride (unfortunately no tunnels) - just stayed local on the roads.

Looks lovely!
I might try and get out this week at night myself, and hunt down some fireflies.

In the meantime, here's another local rindo...20260525_140920.jpg

I was grateful someone previous had a decent sized chainsaw.

I like bridges too!
Kei capable here, and not much else... and again, why I bought the Hunter Cub was to explore the many similar across Boso Hanto.

20260601_101056.jpg

Running over the first one above, you come across a second... great!

20260601_101138.jpg

Even better, straight off the bridge you run through a tunnel.
Bliss.

20260601_101322.jpg

Then, up the rindo more tunnels.
Lined in this situation, as they date a lot later than the other stuff I've been exploring.

20260601_101545.jpg

More!

20260601_101857.jpg

Mud filled cutting.

20260601_102429.jpg

The last tunnel on this rindo.

20260601_102530.jpg

End of the road, where the parallel river has both washed away the trail and triggered a landslide...

Morning started off with a deer and her newborn fawn in the backyard.
IMG_0908.jpeg
Then it was out to some unexplored logging roads along the Elochoman river.
IMG_0912.jpeg
Dense forest with lots of moss growth
IMG_0913.jpeg
Several small bridges get crossed. No fancy painted ones like @Kuro Neko posted. Actually most of the bridges crossed were in rough shape.
IMG_0916.jpeg
IMG_0917.jpeg
Head away from the river and start climbing.
IMG_0923.jpeg
Reached about 1500' in elevation
IMG_0920.jpeg
Then came to the end of the trail. Might have been able to squeeze around the left side of the gate but I am 12 miles from nowhere and still recovering from knee replacement surgery so decided not to attempt it.
IMG_0919.jpeg
Grabbed a few more pictures on the way out.
IMG_0924.jpeg
Kind of an oddity for around here. Typically they don't dig gravel pits to build logging roads. Normal operation is to just knock the rock off the hillside to crush then haul out onto the road as needed.
IMG_0929.jpeg
Found a number of other roads to explore so will return to this area in the near future.

Well... there's plenty of rindo across our prefecture, but it is the tunnels I've been seeking... and going to run out one day I assume.

Deer!
The fawns do look cute - though they are a pest here otherwise.

A friend down the valley has an issue with wild boar, and we've snared a few shika as well, and unlike others he does not off them, but sets them free.
For some reason, they then become your friend asking for attention (and possibly food):

20250501_141340.jpg

They normally retreat from humans.

The rest of your ride looks great, and I can imagine exploring all those trails.
How do you find the street tires on similar, as I am chewing through block tires with my transport stages on bitumen to get to my trails?

I will have a look on Maps.me to see if I can find yours too...

20260601_102923.jpg

Leaving the tunnels above, I checked the dates - 1961.

20260601_103546.jpg

Possibly about this time, this Daihatsu got lost.

20260601_104548.jpg
20260601_112146.jpg

A typical rindo entrance in Boso Hanto - small mountain village or hamlet, with a trail leading off into the mountains behind.
The formal rindo are sign-posted (yellow diamond sign), and named accordingly - like East Mountain, Big Deer Storehouse, 1000 Ricefields, Little Town Stub Number 1, Big River, Six Trees, Tall Hill, Central Mountain, etc...

20260601_112827.jpg

The end of the rindo above.
It used to run all the way over this mountain, but has since been closed by a landslide.

20260601_115953.jpg

Up another walking track, there's a famous waterfall.

20260601_130156.jpg

A small temple marks the start.

20260601_134551.jpg

An old kura (storehouse) in one village.

20260601_134613.jpg

The recently planted rice is starting to green...
