Tap and die

The Chinese gas can I bought came without a holder so the seller refunded the amount needed to order this one from him. It arrived only to discover the enclosed bolt is smaller than the threaded rod. Rather than return them I've decided to try to fix them. So first I will take it to the store and find out the current sizes after that I will buy the tap or die I need. So my question is is it better to tap the bolt or die the rod? No experience with either one.

definitely easier to run a tap down the hole. you need to drill it to the appropriate size 1st. my guess is its an M8. 1mm smaller drill than the tap (7mm) is a good starting point .

fkn chinesium.

go slow, and use oil on the tap. one turn in, 1/4 turn back, and proceed down. don't be surprised of the nut comes loose from that plastic. I would suggest holding that part w the nut in a set of vice grips or a vice to keep the nut from rotating on you.

good luck.
