Transporting inside an SUV

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to roll their Trail 125 into the back of an SUV? I have a 2022 Toyota 4Runner and I'm hoping after folding the handlebars down, I can roll the bike right on in and strap it upright. I have an outside carrier but it's not an option when towing my camper... My other idea is to take the front wheel off and mount a 4x4 wood block in its place to lower the front end and back the bike into my 4Runner.

Any photos or ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you can put it in the camper, do that instead. If you can mount it to the camper, do that, but also be aware that this bike has a reputation for making trailers tongue light if you mount it behind the camper instead of between the camper and the vehicle.

If this photo gleaned from the interwebs is accurate, the bike will just barely fit if you angle it across the diagonal. The bike's overall length is 78" and calculations of the cargo space say the longest diagonal dimension is sqrt(66^2 + 44^2) =79". The error margin is too low for me to try something like that myself though and that sounds unsafe with hard braking.
  • Assuming you could teleport it in, the front wheel off option would work better. The cluster on the front is taller than 32". The seat and rack are both below 32" though.
  • This bike has 17" wheels, so in theory you could probably reclaim up to 17" or so by removing both wheels (give or take for fenders). You will still need to relocate 200'ish lbs of bike inside your vehicle if you do that. But it would probably fit with both wheels off.
  • It's worth noting that if you were thinking of using a dolly under the stock crash bars, those aren't designed to hold the weight of the bike, let alone the weight of the bike + tie down straps.
On the global forum for Tern GSDs, I couldn't find any photos of a 4Runner with a Tern GSD cargo bicycle inside it and wheels on (length: 72") which is smaller, shorter, and lighter than the CT125. Note that the Tern GSD is specifically designed to be wheeled into the back of a car exactly as you describe.

Thanks for the feedback Sneaky. I was thinking a 4x4 or 6x6 block of wood with an axel diameter hole drilled through it. It would lower the bike enough to clear the handlebars. The 4Runner has 4 built in tie down D rings in the back compartment so I can easily secure the bike at 4 points. The 4x4 block will also shorten the overall length and since the bike has a center-stand, popping the wheel off should be easy. As soon as the weather warms above 35 around here I'll be doing a trial fit and post photos. There is no way the bike can fit into the camper given the layout of the entry... so that's not an option. I totally understand hanging a rack off the back of the camper as a no no as well...

If you do this, you'll probably be the first, and the information will be super useful to others. We love that kind of experimentation. Even more so when it's someone else's car and bike 😂

front hitch and carrier. just an option. will also balance out some tongue weight when using the camper. .02

Thanks, I'll be looking into that option. I'm not sure the hitch weight limit or how much stress it would put on the front suspension for a long trip...

Sounds like you might want to trade the 4runner for a Tacoma I have a 2015 4runner and it’s hard enough just shoving a mountain bike in there. I’ve been contemplating trading in on a pickup since I bought the bike too. Would be awesome for camping.

Is there a way to mount the bike on the tongue of the trailer? Where propane tanks etc usually go, maybe? Might take some clever welding. Just a thought. This is assuming it’s a medium-ish camper.

its a 260 lb bike. would be fine if the hitch limit is 350-500. the carriers only weigh 50 lbs max. IMHO.

Right, the suggestion was on a trailer tongue near the propane tanks of the camper. 260#+ the trailer tongue weight…

I don’t know if this will apply in your case but once the front wheel is over the lip of the bed the handlebars et al effectively lower which might just give sufficient headroom to roll the bike the bike straight in

Dumping some or all of the front tyre’s air might further Improve the above head clearance

Someone on the FB group fit one in a Honda Element. And now I know I could have saved some money renting truck to pick mine up. I' was a first time rider and I was not going to try and ride it home ;-)

IMO that $19-25 is well worth not having to load the bike into an SUV and risk damaging it or the SUV.

Hmm... that looks like an older CT110 or CT90, not the modern CT125. Still, pretty impressive.
