So what other bad habits do you have that takes a hit on your wallet? My biggest expenses other than bikes have been knives, guns and camping gear. Here is a link to my pinterest page with pics of gear. What about you guys?

I have a girlfriend, dogs, mountain bikes and make things using a 3D printer.

Of those, the girlfriend, dogs, and bikes cost a decent chunk of change, and the 3D printer is pretty cheap.

I remember girlfriends, trust me girlfriends are not expensive. Having been married 4 times I can tell you wives are expensive especially when your wife finds out you have a girlfriend. I have zero experience with 3D printing although I think it's probably the cheapest of the 3. Bicycles aren't they just small motorcycles without the motor? I don't get it. I remember getting my first minibike in 75, it had a 5hp lawnmower engine with a pull start. Lost all interest in pedaling after that, lol.

knives, guns and camping gear.

That's a very cool knife collection. I carry a Leatherman Sideclip, or Victorinox Swiss Army Classic if backpacking, daily and have a few Kissing Crane, Buck, and KA-BAR knives.

Travel is a big area I spend money on. I try to travel frugally but it still adds up. Camping and backpacking gear as well as bicycles and paddlecrafts to enable that travel take big hits on my wallet. A nice thing about the backpacking gear is that much of the stuff I hang onto but don't regularly use myself ends up becoming loaner gear to take friends along. Other currently growing collections are tools - many specialty or vintage, antique housewares - especially cast iron cookware that I restore, books, and vinyl records.

In the past I've spent a lot on vintage American cars and trucks, but I cleared house recently as the market got insane and I barely drive vs riding motorcycles. Same for vintage computer terminals and workstations (DEC, NeXT, SGI, Sun) that I used to repair and spend a lot of money on hard to find parts for. The market got hot and I got tired of having things I barely use and might be burdened with having to move in the future, so I sold most of them off.

I bought a 1988 f350 dually crew cab diesel, flew to Florida for it bc it was rust free. Drove it home and spent another 3x what I paid for it in repairs and upgrades. 20g total. But now I have a non computer 5 sp stick , turbo diesel to last me the rest of my days. Oh, and I bought a tear drop camper to pull behind the harley for my alaska trip this coming May. About 5g for that. I live pretty cheap day to day though. No bills for house or cars.

Goes to show you, we're all mad here, lunatics all the way round. There must be a banker or stockbroker here somewhere who just sits in his vault count money aka Scrooge.

A Datsun 280ZX I've spent way too much money on. Tons of mods on the engine and drivetrain/ suspension. It'll hang with a few modern minivans.

And I'm about to finally B20 swap the civic after 355k miles. I plan to go VTEC just to be safe. I have a 5speed/halfshafts/ mounts from a '90 integra sitting around. Just need to pull the trigger on the engine and harness.

I also have an ex-wife. She was way more expensive than the girlfriend. 3D printing is like owning a CT125, high initial outlay with low ongoing costs and if you choose right, you're able to completely service it all on your own pretty quickly because everything is accessible.

I have two bicycles and an electric unicycle (EUC). The EUC was, "I need something I can put in a car, costs less than it costs to rent a parking space in Seattle, and can go up to 35 mph". Maintenance wise, shy of components failing completely it's entirely just changing tubes and tires. Super straightforward if very difficult to do. The first bicycle is a custom built Titanium MTB designed for bikepacking and long distance riding; one way to think of it is the last bike I will ever buy. It's very similar to a motorcycle without an engine in many ways. The other bicycle is an electric cargo bike, so it does actually have a motor, but it's hauling an average of 340-400 lbs whenever I use it, which is usually for doing Costco runs, shopping runs, hauling back several bags of dirt... it can haul about half of what a car can haul with 10% of the running costs, and a distance to empty of 110 mi on eco mode. It's pretty hilly here so I usually get about 1/4 of that.

Realistically, the bicycles are because I live near 2 major bicycling routes (including one that goes to my workplace) and the extremely large number of services that I live near within 5 miles of my home. However I did crunch the numbers and their running costs are slightly higher than the CT125 per mile, only because the CT125 is a very, very, very cheap machine to keep running if you do your own servicing.

RE: knives, I have weird knife likes. I'm a huge fan of my Opinel, I think it's a No. 7. I have two of those. I have two Milwaukee Fastbacks that are my frequent use equipment, and I've been tempted to pick up a chisel knife (pref for a left handed one) for some of the home work I do.

GF, house, off-roading trips, some fab projects for me and some for work. Old VW's, trucks, one of which an '63 Datsun I found last spring in Kansas. A Vintage Camper Trailer which I used to use reguarly, until I fell in Love with a girl who doesn't like camping LOL!

'63 Datsun 320. 90% original. Column-shift four-speed. It either needs pain or has great Patina!

Nice Falcon!

I used to have a '60 Ranchero, all stock. At one point I bought a spare engine (144CI Six Cylinder) which I made a Coffee Table out of. Ten years and two moves later, the Ranchero is long-gone but I still use the Coffee Table.

IMG_9828.JPG

The Pistons/Con Rods are it's feet, which I welded to a base plate I made which bolts-on where the oil pan used to. The glass was custom made by a local shop. The idea was that if I ever needed to replace the engine in my car (truck, whatever) this block could be machined and put back into service. Like most Coffee Tables, it's a crap magnet LOL!

My favorite hobby is flying and racing rc helicopters. I play with the bigger ones, approximately six feet long, five foot main rotor diameter, all electric and put out around 8 hp. Fast, agile and addicting.
Yeah I'm gonna need to see one of those bigger ones, with a banana for scale if possible.
