Bike will either not go into 2nd gear or is extremely hard to get in gear .Third gear same thing. The bike is new less than 50 miles on it.The problem starts after the bike is warm.Very frustrating as I am trying to get the feel of the bike.Anybody else run into this problem any suggestions on what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.

X2 on the clutch as recommended. I adjusted mine incorrectly one time and had that exact problem

Literally the first thing I had to do on my maintenance thread was adjusting the clutch. Also, after doing it 2-3 times, I haven't had to touch it for a while.

Glad you brought this up. I watched a UTube video and followed the simple instructions, went for a ride this morning and its way smooth now, my trail only has 200 miles on it. It made an incredible difference, really

WOW 50 miles and the adjustment was that bad. I wonder if the high dollar " highly skilled" setup strikes again? Do any dealers follow this forum? Listen up, people pay good money for these bikes, then are charged an additional setup often at a high rate. Low oil, sloppy adjustments.....really. :cautious: Is it too much to ask that a little time is actually taken to set the bike up right. If not waive the setup fee. Quit charging hundreds of dollars for what amounts to nothing. :(

I can see a situation where doing the auto clutch adjustment improperly could result in the auto clutch coming out that far, even if the initial adjustment was technique correct. Unless I'm reading my service manual wrong, the torque value for the locking nut is 12 Nm, which to me is quite high for a nut in that application. I know from experience if you don't tighten the lock nut properly, it can rattle loose and allow the clutch to, uh, self adjust.

With the great advice and videos on this forum I adjusted the auto clutch.I drove it and it worked good and proper. After a second drive the problem started again not as bad as previous.Do I just keep trying to adjust till I get it right? Pretty discouraging on a new bike.

That's what I did. Rode with a mini screwdriver and my 14mm wrench in my pocket for a bit. Eventually it became habit, if I'm not preparing for a trip you can usually find a small pack of tools in my jacket pocket.

I've check the adjustment a few times. First time just past 100 miles. The first check just a tiny adjustment, tiny. Since then it has been static. Being out of adjustment so far that it cannot shift at only 50 miles seems a little excessive to me for "break-in wear"

Yeah, there's been two quick things that helped with shifting. 1) clean motor oil, 2) properly adjusted clutch. If I start missing shifts and I know the oil's been in there a while, I'll change the oil.

(EDIT: the third thing that helped was the shift support, but that wasn't a "quick" fix, took a little more effort).

Its funny, my cub, which is the same motor and auto clutch as the trail, required no adjustment, and it has more miles than the trail. Built in different places?

I thought that money paid to the dealership for set up was supposed to go to making sure the bike was double checked , adjusted and ready to roll.....

One came from the factory properly adjusted, the other did not?? :unsure:Gilligan, who usually washes the bikes and sweeps the floor, set up the trail because the professor was chasing Ginger that day ;) Whatever the reason the adjustment being off so far the bike would not shift after only 50 miles.........something ain't right. Many of us wouldn't have made it home from the maiden voyage if shifting was kaput at 50 miles. :cautious:

Adjusted clutch again good so far.Marked original setting both times.Second adjustment slot moved more than first adjustment. Hopefully this is a fix.I live in Nova Scotia Canada so I have the different shift pattern clutch adjustment should still be the same. Its been unusually cold here this May so I have only taken short drives. The not going into gear problem always happened after seven to ten miles.
