I've ordered a new 428hd x ring chain from rockymountainatvmc.com should be here tomorrow however they are out of master links along with several other online options who are not trying to sell one for enormous prices, I have several spare ones for my stock chain and I'm wondering if in an emergency on the trail if I leave off the orings will it work to hold the chain together until I can get the correct one? Talking about an emergency situation only, not a daily option.

I carry 3 or 4 assorted links in Baja, I plan to use whatever May fit to get me home. I wouldn’t see any issue, just having it will mean you don’t need to use it!

Bridget McCutchen, who is currently attempting to set a world record for youngest person to circumnavigate the world by motorcycle on her Kawasaki Versys X-300, recently broke her master link and made do with safety wiring the chain back together to limp it to a pub in Ireland for some assistance from other motorcyclists. Any spare master link that fits would be a great solution, much sketchier things can work in a true emergency.

Questionable if it will arrive on time, but they say they have it in stock. I think I have some extra ones in my spares kit because I was so frustrated with the last time I snapped the clip, so I'll see if I have an extra and put it in the bag of goodies to bring with me to New Mexico.

+1 to this. Old is as good as new in a pinch. I went for years without breaking a master link on my bicycle, then broke two in the same month. Used the old "spares" I'd been saving after removing my old chains. I'm not sure I could say the same about the master link clip.

Has anyone run an X-ring 428 chain on their Honda Trail? Do they sap away some power?

I have a D.I.D. 428VX x-ring type chain on my CT125. No power sapping observed. It requires less maintenance and does not wear as quickly as the OEM chain did. For those reasons you're likely to see slightly better performance out of it than the non-sealed chain unless you're meticulous about chain cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment.
