ScootRoute App

On another forum I saw a mention of a navigation app called ScootRoute. I've downloaded the app, and played around with it a bit. It's designed to pick routes for bikes that can't handle highway speeds or steep grades. I haven’t tried it on the road yet, but it looks promising. Just an FYI…I have no connection with the app.

I just checked it out and I like the concept of it too many ads though.

Which part of the world are you using this in? I've seen some options like this before, but they were limited to the UK. I'd love to get some domestic USA feedback.

I have used it a bit in upstate NY- works well for what it is. Nice to limit speed limits to 45 if I want.

First-world problem, but gotta love that my phone is "too new" to run that app... I definitely need something like that down here. 95% of the routes around me require 65-70mph highways to get past rivers and bayous.

I'm In the US (Wisconsin). It seems to work in my rural area. The routes I've asked it to develop seem to use 45mph roads rather than the 55's. It gives me round about routes, but that’s just fine. I think it’s worth playing around with.

Does anyone know if there are other apps that lets you set your max speed - to avoid certain roads? seems the scoot app is for mobile only not available as a desktop option either. Curious to know what others use beside google maps>cycling route.

Garmin BaseCamp lets you somewhat plot routes that way by messing with the "average speed" settings but it's really a hack and doesn't work great. The software has a bit of a learning curve to use and the map detail is lacking. Garmin stopped developing the BaseCamp application several years ago, so it's not receiving feature updates. I wouldn't recommend learning how to use it for this purpose, but it is one of the few options I've found.

OpenStreetMap has a speed limit value for most routes where you can view different speeds as different colors, so I use that to review a route and confirm it's going to be reasonable. I'll also check out the sattelite view to look for paved vs unpaved roads.

I set my GPS to "avoid highways," preview the route, and then go. If I end up on too fast of a road I'll pull off and reevalate my options. I do wish there were a better solution of a good mapping and navigation software where you can just set a maximum speed and have it attempt to plot a route based on that.

ScootRoute having ads so that was an immediate non-starter for me.

That's helpful! Likely won't dive into the Garmin option but the open street map seems useful. The ads haven't been too bad on scootroute, i get they have to generate some revenue somehow with a free to use app... Too bad there isn't a paid version.

Thanks again!

I agree, if there were a paid version without ads I'd likely be happy to pay for it and see how the development goes. Ads don't belong in navigation software, IMO. With Google Maps on Android if I search "Ace Hardware" the top result will be a sponsored result for Lowes or Home Depot, with Ace below it. It's a poor user experience and a distraction for someone trying to get somewhere. One of the many reasons I prefer using a dedicated GPS device on the motorcycles and keep my phone in my pocket.

I never thought of looking for an app like this but it is a good idea. I use Google for basic route and then look at the elevation for the map on Rever to see where my problem areas are. I am bidding on a Garmin 700i on eBay right now.

You can see a few troublesome areas in this trip I'm planning.

You can set google maps to bicycle as a mode of transport. This seems to keep you to secondary roads. Double check the route and make sure it doesn’t put you a bicycle only path like a greenway

Ok, so I ended up buying a new Garmin Montana 700i after I failed to secure one at auction.

I am now researching routes via Google maps and then Rever. Then I plot waypoints in the Explore website on my laptop which are pushed to my phone and then sync to the device. After the waypoints are there, I create a course and then save it as a route. You can choose “minimize elevation gain” as a calculation option. If I don’t like the route it is taking me, I force it another way with additional waypoints.

It is clunky and not exactly something you can just jump on your bike and ride without a lot of prep if you are genuinely concerned but it is fine for planning my 1000 miles in 24 hour trip.

1000 miles in 24 hour trip.
In what vehicle??? Over 41mph average is going to be quite impressive, I spend A LOT of time in baja and that is a top tier level speed. We pee through a catheter and have about 1 minute pit stops, I've never done more than 11 hours straight!

Keep us in the loop

I released a teaser trailer on my YT but it is mostly fictitious film-related companies I made up. I have only started filming the preparation. Catheters arrived last week and I am just waiting on a few other things to finish prep. I don't know if I will make it but I am certainly going to try. I was also going to try to document the trip to submit for a Saddlesore 1000 or Ride-1k-in-a-day but I'm not going to have time to do anything other than ride, fuel up and perform chain maintenance.

EDIT: I started a thread in the Ride Report section so as not to hijack this thread too much.

I read a lot of the complaints/reviews of recent Garmin devices but I think folks are just used to their iPhone and Google/Apple Maps. I've had a few Garmin Devices going back 20 years and this one is definitely easier to use than my 60Csx that I considered using for this trip. One of the reasons I picked up a new Garmin is the built-in satellite communication functionality. If things go sideways, it will likely be somewhere in remote California or Nevada where there is little to no cell coverage.

On the SCB, I was in the saddle for 12-15 hours a day. That was good for around 400 miles. I hope @BaldRider pulls it off! It would be a hell of an accomplishment.

Objectively if it was a fast day at 400 miles in 12 hrs that is 800.
I get endurance, averaged 117 on my bicycle for 25 day’s to get from San Diego to Charleston. I’ve pedaled Canada to Mexico too. Moto’d us to Cabo more then a few times.

I would love to hear of the success, I just think with a top speed around 45ish averaging 41 is a heavy lift. Not sure the 125 sets you up for said success…. Closed 1 mile oval maybe, traffic and stoplights🤔🤔🤔

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess, doesn’t appeal to me. The only place I want to be at midnight is home in bed, not riding some donkey around in the dark.
Imho the beauty is in the attempt, it's almost meaningless if he goes 1 or 1000 miles. All the fun is in the dreams and preparing for the event. Sail away from the shoreline my bearded friend and may what ever God's you believe in bless you and keep your magnificent beard from hitting pavement. Or at least that's my take on it, but don't pay much attention to me I've always been a little crazy, but it keeps me from going insane to quote the man himself.

@bryanchurch06 don’t get me wrong, I used to love nighttime adventures, and I’m certainly done my share. We used to run all night no lights (stupid teenagers) then later when I grew up I did crazy shit like fly around in the dark, but then one of my friends lost his head, literally, and suddenly what my father told me my whole life became obvious. Nothing good happens after midnight. Best practice at least for me these days is ride during the day, well rested and in a good frame of mind unless I have no other choice.
