Serial number?

I did not want to dirty this thread up with my question https://hondatrail125.com/index.php?threads/members-by-serial-number.96/page-9
I am assuming the serial number is the last few numbers of the VIN, but I see a lot of people posting three digit numbers which would become redundant after awhile. Is the serial number, as meant in the attached thread, something different than the last few digits of the VIN? I also see some four digit numbers posted up which makes more sense if it is the VIN.

Thank you

I think your assumptions are right. Folks posted the last 3-4 of the sequential number (last 6) from the VIN in that thread. That's not enough to uniquely identify the bike unless the other sequential numbers in front of it are all padding (zeroes) and the year is given or can be assumed. Keep in mind that thread was started as these bikes were first being delivered in the USA and there weren't many of them.

Vehicle registries run by clubs or enthusiasts usually document the entire VIN, or for antique vehicles the serial number, and then sometimes lock the info down to members only for privacy purposes.
