33 miles of desert and gravel roads today

I finished installing the tires and 13t sprocket this morning and decided to try them out. Left the rv Park and cut across the desert to greenfield mine rd, followed it to Butterfield stage rd to A08 then back to keeler rd, then back to the rv. The tires and sprocket were exactly what I needed for this area, gave me confidence in the sandy parts and crawled thru the rocky ups and downs like it should. The only spots that were bad was the deep gravel sections where a grader had come thru. I'm running a kenda k262 300x17 45p front and a shinko 244 300x17 50p rear. Took a lot of pics so I made a video and posted it if you are interested, I know the video is crap btw so please comment about it if you like 😁

It's hard to tell from the pics just how steep some of it is, I'm researching gopro cameras if anyone has experience with them I'd appreciate the feedback. Thanks Bryan

There's nothing quite like being in the wide open desert. I have a similar tire setup waiting to be spooned on soon.

I have 2 GoPro 8’s and an 11. The 11 overheats pretty quickly at anything other than HD30 but the battery lasts a lot longer. The 12 is basically the same as the 11. 9s and 10s are available on Amazon for $220 and $250, respectively.

There are other brand options out there. I stick with GoPro because you get unlimited cloud storage of GoPro-filmed footage for a decent price ($25/yr right now).

Thanks I've been looking at the gopro 10, seems like you spend as much for the accessories as the basic camera costs. I plan on doing a couple long rides this yr and would like to film it.

I had a bad experience with GoPro where they accidentally deleted all my cloud stored videos and were unable to restore them, so I will caution a reminder that "the cloud is just someone else's computer". Luckily I still had the original files on microSD and backed up to an external hard drive, but that was a negative experience with GoPro. GoPro are based out of the USA, while most of the competitors (Insta360, DJI) are based out of China. Any of them can intentionally or unintentionally mishandle your data if you use their software. Years ago DJI collected driver's license info that I think was intended to comply with FAA regulations for drones at the time, and they mishandled that sensitive info. Luckily if you want to go tinfoil hat, you can avoid using manufacturer apps and manually transfer the recorded files off of the microSD card and open them in a video editor of your choice.

My latest action camera is an Insta360 OneRS and it was expensive but so far hasn't given me any overheating or lockup issues like past GoPro HERO Blacks have. Personally I wish GoPro had continued with the "Session" form factor because the GoPro HERO5 Session has been my favorite helmet camera, with the main downside being that it had an integrated battery that isn't easy to replace when it finally dies. You can often get a good deal picking up a used prior-generation GoPro loaded with accessories if you don't need the latest and greatest.

That's a good point about the cloud storage. I use it as a second backup for my backup HDD. Storage is relatively cheap but still expensive enough if you film in 4k and keep all of your raw footage. Not that anything that I record is that valuable. I'm just a footage hoarder. That is going to have to change because the files out of my Lumix S5iiX are massive.

It is also worth mentioning that video quality isn't as important as audio quality. You can watch mediocre video without much of a problem but bad audio is a dealbreaker for most. Get out there with any action camera you can find for cheapish and have fun!

Yea, I looked up the prices, calculated how many meals I would have to miss and started looking at the gopro 10 again. Eventually I'll find one for 200 on sale.

Good job Bryan! You may be the next 'Ithcy Boots'!

I have a Fledgling Youtube Channel I post to infrequently and contains un-edited ramblings about whatever car or truck I'm working-on at that point in time. For a time I had a series (which I thought was actually decent) I made on how to outfit a work truck in a way which makes sense for my industry. Sadly the corporation I work for asked that it be taken-down so it's gone. Another video covered my friends and I getting a classic truck I'd recently bought running, but I got so tied-up in the process of actually getting the truck running that I forgot to film anything until the very end, so it never got posted since at that point it was just a bunch of guys sitting around eating Pizza standing around a roughly idling old truck.

I did have the thought once to film a day-long-ride through the Eastern Sierra's a buddy and I took on our big street bikes. I bought a bunch of no-name Chinese Action camera's. Mounted three of them all over my bike, I even did a decent intro. Then while climbing onto the bike I knocked two of them off my saddlebags, breaking one of them and snapping the mount on the other. Not wanting to waste time dealing with it I left one camera mounted up-front, which managed to not be recording for most of the time when it was supposed to be and when it was, mostly was aimed at the sky. The only usable footage it got was of my riding buddy waving at it during a rest stop. I've not played with cameras since LOL!

That's about what I expect my experience to be😀, I'm trying to stop more and take pics. That's the biggest regret I have from the cdt, I didn't take enough pics of the amazing scenery we rode thru which got me thinking about a camera. Btw of the many improvements honda made to the 23 model the sprocket cover isn't one of them, it's a real pain to remove and the kickstand switch wire is connected to it. Definitely going to change that the next time I remove it

This is my next ride, I rode it on my atv, very rough in frying pan canyon and massacre canyon then it gets a little easier to Fort Cummings. Hopefully I'll have a camera on this one. If you are a history bug check out the Butterfield stage route that runs through the area.

Great scenery. Hope you only run into friendly company on the trail!!!

I can relate to those pains, lol. My older action camera footage all begins with me doing a mirror check to see if the chin mounted camera is actually flashing the red "recording" light.

Still I frequently managed to have it shoot photos when I meant to record video, record time-lapse instead of real time, or record a short video clip and then stop recording seconds later. It bugged me enough that I bought into the remote control accessories when they came out, so now I can more easily glance at a remote control display to see what the camera is doing.
It's the small screen with a red light on top to the left of the handlebar bag in this capture, mounted on a wristband that it came with.

I have found the remote for older GoPros is not incredibly reliable. I still do mirror checks when I don't have the camera mounted in a way that I can see the blinking light (which has a name but I don't know what it is).

Some years ago I dallied with filming from a cheap action camera fastened to the back of my left glove so it could be easily and readily pointed wherever. It was very effective ‘cept the remote mounted on the right bar was prone to taking a day off. However I suspect equipment is more reliable these days

Looking forward to the ride reports
