45 miles with the wife today

From the onset of the 125’s being announced in ‘20 or ‘21 my wife and I decided we wanted to get a pair of them. We all know how it went with trying to get those early models so we had to wait awhile. I fell in love with the ‘23 greens so I really ramped up my efforts last Fall. I was able to snag my brand new ‘23, but my wife really NEEDED a red one, so off to the used market I went. I was able to find her a ‘22 and we were both happy with our respective bikes.

It has turned out to be a little harder than I thought it was going to be to get my wife out on the road. She has had a fear of other vehicles so her jaunts have been limited to 6 mile rides out to a horse ranch to take care of her horse. For the longest time she has been asking me to get a comm system hooked up to our helmets. I was not too wild about the idea but if it helped get her on the road- all good! We are experiencing beautiful weather in California right now so I asked her if I could get her to ride with me to the nearest Cycle Gear which is two cities away. The ride would have been a route that took us on a moderately traveled main road in our town out to the outskirts of town where the ride would become a twisty and slightly hilly country road with blind corners but not much traffic. That road would then dump us onto a busier road in the next town with traffic congestion. We would then make a Westerly cut on a lighter road and onto a shorter country type road. That country road would transition into the road of her fears- major traffic, known violence, known disregard for the traffic laws and into a major retail portion of the town that is two away from us.

That finally got us to the Cycle Gear. The two workers in that store were awesome. They hooked our helmets up with a Cardio comm system and stuffed our jackets with upgraded protective gear.

WOW- what a difference! Now that we could talk to each other her confidence really shot up. We were able to call out lane changes for each other and other little chit chat that made her feel not so alone in these varied environments. She even made suggestions of things to see “on the fly”. As we got closer to home she asked if we could just shoot past the house to make the additional 6 mile ride out to go take care of the horse.

When all was said and done we put 45 miles on the bikes today, her longest ride by a long shot. Her tension level was really high on the way to the store but it nearly disappeared and gave way to relaxation once we got the comms all set up. I seriously did not know it would make that much of a difference for her but I am glad it did.

Thee wife and I ride a lot in Baja, went down the full FM radio set ups when we rode medical for some organized rides. They are second nature to me after many 1000's of miles of dirt roads in baja for safety and navigation. For some it is another thing to deal with and frustrates them. Glad yours is working out, not sure if we will get the 10yo involved since he's riding further these days...
