See the other thread I started in this section for details on a ride I'm doing next Thursday evening!

Hey I am in Costa Mesa, want to schedule something?
Yeah but it might be in a few months. It's my first bike so I'm getting used to it still. Dont want to ride too far from home yet. I'll try to get good enough on the street to meetup for a ride but I haven't done any trails yet.

Bummer, but I understand. Maple Springs Truck Trail, while a graded Forest Service Road is very steep, rocky and has a lot of traffic on it (at times). All not good things for a new rider.

However if you'd like to do a street ride to Balboa Island (via the Ferry) from Irvine sometime, let me know. I know OC very well and can plan a route where we can avoid a lot of the faster roads in Irvine and *maybe* not get run over LOL!

Is that road still open? I saw the top of the mountain was on fire last night.

I saw that too. According to someone who lives in the canyon, within sight of the gate it is currently still open. The fire was reportedly started by a group who were shooting-off fireworks at the summit and caught one of the buildings up there on fire  Idiots.

I'm going to take one of my larger bikes for a ride up there maybe this evening and see first-hand if the gate is still open or not (plus an evening ride on my KTM Duke sounds pretty appealing).

I have a small group of my friends going on a variety of bikes so as long as the gate us open and it's not raining (too hard) we'll probably still go.

Hi Kev, still working on getting my trail but i have a ‘22 Honda monkey that I wanted to try Maple Springs with. How do you think it will do? I live off Santiago canyon, so am very interested to do street riding, exploring the area as well

Sounds great! I think a Monkey will do just fine, though depending on how far you are from Silverado Canyon Rd. you may want to truck your Monkey to the Trailhead. I live 30 Mins from the Maple Springs gate and I'm bringing my Trail to the staging area in my truck to save having to ride it down Santaigo Canyon Rd.

I'll send you a PM with all the Deets! If everyone who has expressed an interest in going, it could be an interesting group of MC's!

In the future, we'd love to have you join us! Just let me know you're interested just a little more in advance LOL!

We did have good ride, though we ended-up with a smaller group then expected (just me and the two guys I ride with regularly) we had a good time. No Honda's on this trip though. At the last minute I decided to take my TW200 instead of my Trail for no other reason then I hadn't ridden the TW off-road in quite some time and it has a new knobby tire I wanted to test-out.

Left my house at 5, was riding by six (probably a little before), was rolling my bike back into the garage at 9. Would have been home a little sooner but we took advantage of having a Photographer with us and got some staged shots at Four Corners, then I had a work thing I had to handle so that all meant we got back to our trucks after dark

The trail/road was it's normal rough, dusty shape. More silt then I remembered from my last trip up there a month or so ago, but I was in my truck for that trip so I may not have noticed it. Traffic was thankfully light and I was riding mid-pack so I only had one or two wannabe racers in trucks trying to break the speed record to the top.

If the predicted deluge we're supposed to get in the next couple of days arrives, the gate will likely be closed until things dry-out so it'll probably be a couple of weeks before we ride up there again. When we do I'll post an invite here on this site and reach-out to those who reached-out to me directly about this ride.

Anyone in the mood for an adventure by the end of the month? I’m in Costa Mesa, would love to hit some surface streets, maybe take the PCH to Laguna or somethin!

I'd be up for it, but won't have any time for a ride until next month.

BTW I took a ride out to the canyon last night and confirmed that the gate to Maple Springs Rd. is closed (no surprise). It was getting dark so I didn't walk back there to see how much water is in the first water crossing (I was being lazy) but if the road sustained any damage hopefully they repair it quickly and *maybe* get the gate open again by next month.

If you find yourself or can make it near the Santiago canyons I’ll join you. We can ride around cooks corner/modjeska and around the foothill area

Hey peeps! Sat or Sunday! Probably Saturday(26th)... Been following this thread, I'm in the Anaheim Hills area (off SantaAna Cyn Rd) so just up a ways from "Pault"? And not too far from Costa Mesa either "advntrjk"? "Kev250R", not sure where abouts in OC your at but probably not too far away? I hit up Santiago Cyn Rd frequently, breakfast at the "Silverado Cyn Cafe", Live Oak Cyn and Trbuco Creek Rd (stop and watch em fly the RC planes). These have been regular stomping grounds for me as of late! I just recently moved out this way from the Los Alamitos area if anyones familiar with that area and kinda miss rides out to the Palos Verdes and PCH runs ect. I'm thinking I may try to sneak out this weekend to do some putting around to wherever I end up! lol Might be PV or south down to Laguna. All surface streets obviously, Sooooo,,, If anyones doing any riding this weekend, hit me up if your interested... (note, I've done some light trail riding but will probably stick to mostly paved at least till I get some better suited tires) ;)

Hey Dale, I'm just down the road from you in the City of Orange near Wanda & Collins (Santa Ana Cyn Rd turns into Wanda just before it ends at Collins). It's funny, I ride many of the places you mentioned! I haven't been there in a couple of months but I used to eat dinner at the Silverado Cafe once a week or so. I was in Silverado Canyon Monday night (the Cafe is closed on Monday's, but I wanted to see if there was any flood damage in the canyon). Although I'm normally on my KTM Duke when I head out that way.

Sadly, I can't make a ride this Saturday (got a Cars & Coffee thing in Placentia first thing in the morning, then have some work I need to do around my house after, then Speedway MC races in Industry that night). Mid-week, after work are normally great times for a ride for me. Hope you guys have a great ride! I'll PM you my number, if you guys find your way over my way, hit me up! I recently upgraded my Trail to a set of Shinko D/S Tires and will let you take a spin on them if you want to see how you'll like something like them on you Trail!

Have a great ride! Weekends are generally pretty busy for me, both with work, life, trips and wrenching obligations but during the week in the evenings I'm generally free.
