There's a pretty good explanation of G-forces here and what adding a case to a phone does to reduce those forces and the same physics applies to your head inside a helmet. You're not impervious to concussions just because you have a helmet, not all helmets are equal, and just because you didn't get a concussion doesn't mean you didn't get brain damage. Expanding on that, it's also why some people think "no helmet" riders are "safer" - they won't act like their helmet will save them. TL,DR: Ride like you don't have a helmet, be thankful you have one when you need it.

I would like to see the crash. How did you get a concussion with a helmet on? I would expect the helmet to prevent that. I had a car pull out in front of me,my helmet made a huge dent in his driver door, bike went under car, I was a passenger and my helmet hit the drivers helmet when his helmet hit the curb. Both crashes without helmet would of been rough on my head and face.

45-50 mph crash. your face, do as you wish. But look at my helmet below... also resulted in a fractured wrist and a concussion. Jacket an gloves saved me as well. 1st crash i ever had after 26 yrs of riding. If you think its safe, jump out of a moving car at 25mph see how well you do. yes, that's yellow center line transferred onto the face shield. I have go pro vid of this crash if anyone would like to see what a 'low speed' crash can do. .02

Yes I would like to see the low speed crash, purely an educational aspect point of view type thing.

I was wanting to see the go pro footage M in SC crash. His helmet really got scraped up, he must of slid for several feet on the blacktop. Your crash sounds very painful.

I bought 4 helmets and did some research to understand that motorcycle helmets on the market are mainly divided into 4 materials: 1. Thermoplastic Shells 2. Polycarbonate Shells 3. Advanced Fiberglass Shells 4. Kevlar and Carbon Composite Shells.

1.Thermoplastic Shells The cheapest DOT helmet, street legal. Cheaper. Better than nothing. The shell is just a layer of plastic. I seriously doubt the penetration resistance of plastic. I will never buy it.

2.Polycarbonate Shells , if I had a limited budget, I would at least go for this one. Example: police shields, bulletproof glass. Visors for helmets. High impact strength. The downside is that they are heavy, but what can you ask for with a limited budget? Affordable price.

3.Advanced Fiberglass Shells, light. High strength. Some styles are not crazy in price. Personal recommendation.

4. Kevlar and Carbon Composite Shells. $500++ Lightweight, high strength. The best motorcycle helmet material we can buy. Only two nights of hotel money. After all, we put our heads in it. Many people suggest, go buy The most expensive helmet you can afford.

People who are against wearing a helmet will say: It doesn't matter, if you have an accident, you will die the same if you wear a helmet or not.
NO, wrong idea. Just pay $200 and you won't die when a stupid driver doesn't see you at a stop sign. You won't die on a small turn with sand on the ground.

Another tips : Pay attention to the color of the high-end helmet, the price of a single color is lower than that of a pattern.

Full face helmet protection is better, it's hard to imagine that we can control the posture when we fall to the ground. How many pictures of helmets after accidents show facial impact. At least the dentist charges more than the best helmet in the world.

I don't have a modular helmet because it would nearly always be in the up position on my Goldwing. Since I bought a 3/4, it's the only helmet I really use now and am considering flipping my RF1400. That hasn't been worn in a while and I need thicker pads since I lost a ton of weight (out of stock everywhere last I checked).


Sure, I look dorky but a change in helmet won't make much of a dent in that.

I thought i had it on youtube but i don't. I'll dig it up and host it tonight if i remember, i know i have it at home. yes i slid an easy 50 ish feet. measuring the scrape marks on the pavement from the bike were longer by far. I got lucky overall.

My recent spill has me shopping for a new helmet. Pretty certain I will upgrade to Snell or ECE rating. I'm thankful I hit dirt and not pavement. I don't live close enough to a cycle shop to try on helmets so it might be trial-and-error with Amazon or other online sellers. As with the tire megathread, good info here and a lot to learn.

Well I done did it I went and got myself a scorpion EXO modular helmet. It is staggeringly comfortable I feel like this was a very good choice

If you spend enough money to justify it, I have a "Riders Plus Membership" with RevZilla which includes "free" returns by mail. Great for trying on helmets and clothing at home, I'd recommend it if that makes financial sense for you. I buy a lot of motorcycle parts, accessories, and tools for myself and others each year so it pays for itself in my situation.

I was wearing a HJC i70 with a nice neon orange and dark blue pattern on it back when I was riding my Ruckus as a daily commuter but I guess my face got fatter along with the rest of me over the last few years so I need to size up and get a new lid.

Does anybody sell anything that’s a close color match for the green version of the 125? It seems like plain matte black has taken over as the dominant color for most brands.

HJC sell replacement interior pads. If you wanted to keep what you have you might be able to get it to fit by purchasing and installing the smaller size cheek pads. Just a thought.

Just get a white helmet and put some green reflective tape on the back. If you do match the green of the bike it isn't going to enhance your visibility much, good green reflective tape will pop in the vision of car pilots.

i prefer a white or silver helmet for visibility. I have too many bikes in too many colors to worry about matching stuff.
