The foot shifter lever also disengages the shifter clutch. After pressing into gear you can slowly let off the shift pedal while rev matching. You can make it be really smooth if you focus on that task, and then once it's in muscle memory you won't have to think about it so much to shift with a less than perfect but still less lurchy downshift.

Welcome!

I've been riding ATV's with centrifugal clutches similar to the one our Trail's since I was a kid and still get jerky shifts on on my Trail; it's just not a smooth-shifting transmission from what I've seen, though it may loosen-up a bit over time or you'll find a routine which will help to smooth it out. Mine is to back all the way off the throttle, shift, then back on the throttle. Even still occasionally I get a rough shift.

Others have mentioned adjusting the clutch, which may help. However with only 1,200 miles on my Trail I've not felt the need to do that yet.

Good luck and enjoy your new ride!

Straight from the factory, my bike had a slack chain and a slack throttle. Both of those made slow speed maneuvers without dragging the brake difficult. Bringing both into spec, in particular making the throttle on the tighter side of the spec, will help. That's an easy adjustment too, requires minimal tools.

I think the downshifting takes a little getting used to, partly because instead of my hand operating the clutch to match revs, I have to slowly release the shift lever to achieve that (shift lever acts as a shifter and a clutch lever together)
