After 10 mon on waiting list I finally got one. I ride high mountain trails in MT so want to gear mine down and put better tires on it.
Does this CT125A use 420 or 428 chain? What is the difference.

I live in Butte. Just getting back into trail riding with a motorcycle. I have a 4wheeler and a side by side and hunt mostly off of them. Motorcycle doesn’t do snow and mud very well. Rode the Rocky Mountain Jamboree in Southern Utah last Sept on my side by side. They have some great trail systems in Southern Utah. You can motorcycle ride them also. I haven’t ridden the CDT system. Sounds like fun. Definitely don’t want to do it alone.

Keep in touch I might do some of those rides with you. Got to do a bunch of upgrades to the 125 and also make a trailer for it. Am thinking about converting a boat trailer I have to hauling bike. Have a couple big trailers but don’t want to have to use them just for small bike.

I saw someone else mentioning it uses a 428 chain, which is correct, but no one said the difference. The main difference is the pins and roller width are slightly larger, but the pitch (distance between links) and the actual rollers are the same specs. Aka the chain is "wider".

you can swap them all over to 428 sprockets and chain, will def last longer. .02. I would upgrade when its time to replace the stock ones, no downside.
How long can one expect to get out of the stock chain with moderate use?

depends on the rider, how its used and how its maintained. I swapped my chain to a higher end gold 420 D.I.D. since i had one laying around. I also dont ride in dirt so?

This is just my opinion, but there's three great reasons for why switching out the stock chain straight away is worth it.
  1. you can keep it as a pre-cut spare in case anything goes wrong, so you're not really losing anything if you store it correctly.
  2. if you replace it before the sprockets have many miles on them, you shouldn't have any issues with sprocket wear.
  3. if you replace it with a higher quality sealed chain, you will have to adjust the chain tension less often.
That last one is the big one for me since I'm a heavy guy on hilly terrain. With the stock chain, it was pretty frequent adjustments. So far on the sealed heavier duty chain it's been 2000 mi and I still haven't needed to adjust my chain (I still get down there and lubricate it regularly though).
