I did this and yes you do have to let the ecu adjust and I noticed a slight increase in performance, but nothing astronomical in the 2nd and third gears. The bike also sounds a lot better. Just a tad bit louder but not obnoxious. I have not had any issues with my bike since.

I guess it all depends on where you cut it off. The last section is where the exhaust does a loop before exiting the muffler. If you omit that the sound gets hollow and in my opinion sounds unmuffled.
