A bit delayed for this report and due to that, might be just a little short on some detailed but I hope y’all enjoy it anyway. My wife asked me if I wanted to go fishing the morning of Father’s Day which was an obvious afirm but with the weather being unusually hot I feared the fishing in town might not be so good.
I said I’d probably just ride my bike around instead but she asked me if spearfish would be good then. Well yea but it’s pretty far and i would probably take more than the morning. So she said “why don’t you take your bike and just fish for the day? You’ve been wanting to ride the canyon so go.”
So I packed my stuff up and waited for morning. I was going to get an early start and break in my new tie-down rings, these things work good!
So I filled up my
Truck (big ouch) and headed down the highway. My father had been I’ll so I gave him a call just to wish him a happy Father’s Day and check in. That conversation lasted about 30 miles and when I realized I had forgotten my helmet… now, is it legal to ride without a helmet in SD? Yes. Is it a good idea? No. So I backtracked all the way home to fetch my helmet and the it was time for round two. Ding ding. and then I had arrived
The wind was howling, and it was a toasty 95 degrees so my expectations for fly fishing were a little low but we started down the canyon anyway. I wish I had a go pro mount so y’all could see how beautiful it is but I did get a couple snaps.
pulled off about 15 minutes into the ride just past the little town of savoy and fished this little pool for a couple hours.
Looks fishy don’t it!?
After about 1.5 hours of fishing. Copious amounts of people started showing up, asking questions and walking in my back cast. I was going to keep fishing until a SUV parked 6 feet behind me while I was clearly fishing there. As my back was to them my dry fly hit their windshield as they finished pulling in and then had the audacity to give me the stink eye as they departed their vehicle. So that was the end of fishing that pool as I couldn’t cast any more so it was back to the bike to discover I had been boxed in by tourists. It took some finagling but we got the bike free and continued on our way.
Pulled off a little side road to get this picture and found a pretty unexpectedly rough road with some of that nasty mud sand and rocks. Should have stopped and taken a picture of it but I was having too much fun.
But here we are going the other way just a little dirtier
