Split tube diaster!

Today having a combination of equipment and great weather I decided to try the split tube method for tubeless. I ordered the tusk heavy duty 16x300 tube, my first mistake I think, I didn't realize how thick those tubes are. I basically destroyed the tube trying to spoon the tire on and pull the tube out the sides. I'm sure I was doing it wrong somehow and after watching more videos they are using much thinner tubes. Eventually I tired of the attempt and put the original tube in and aired it up. Installed the short fender and called it a day. Going to attempt the back tire tomorrow with a thinner tube, but I gotta say the outex tape kit was way easier and faster for me. If I'm not successful tomorrow I'll probably just order another outex kit. Again I'm sure it was user error but today was a real kick in the a**.

Hi Bryan - looking at the photos I think you are right about the heavy duty tube. When it comes to the other wheel might I suggest you try the Model T Ford knees/arms/garbage bag installation method along with your excellent zip ties to avoid damaging the tube - also, using a couple of ties around both tire and wheel to keep the bead in the wheel well is sometimes recommended. If there is a lady in your life her hairdryer can also soften the rubber for easier handling!!

post script - were you applying the levers between tube and wheel rim?

Today is pretty much a repeat of yesterday, even with spooning between rim and tube I get micro tears and somehow tear the valve stem. Sorry kritou I gave it my best shot. I'm installing tubes with sealant for now. For me I gotta say outex or the equivalent tape method is the way to go.

Bryan has indeed invested a lot of time, effort and resources in this attempted conversion technique and apart from the heavy duty tubes I cannot see why it has not worked for him. Perhaps some reflection and relaxation while he and we enjoy his delightfully documented travels will provide a lightbulb moment!

Honestly I blame it on my spooning technique, until now I've only changed tires using the ty wrap method and spooning both sides at once, which is how I destroyed my 1st tube, the pressure ripped the valve core I think. Although I can still use that method with a tube zip tied inside the tire successfully. I then went back and watched videos and tried it spooning 1 side at a time, I kept the spoon between the tube and rim like the videos and still found tears in the tube sidewall where the spoon was pressed against the tube and bead. I freely admit my mistakes were my own inexperience and I'm sure it can be done successfully just not by me at this time. All this experience cost me was about 30 in tubes and sore hands from the attempt.
