When I was between houses (and relationships) five years ago I rented space in a warehouse where all of my toys lived. It was good for the time but I worried endlessly about it getting broken into. While I was there my car trailer was stolen from it's parking spot outside of my warehouse space, though I quickly found it; a homeless couple had cut the cable I had running through the wheels, pushed it to the other side of the complex and used it as a raised foundation for their 'home'. Upon it's return I found a way to park it inside.
So when I started shopping for a house I made not having anything in storage a requirement. I lucked-out as the house I bought is on an odd-sized lot and has RV parking on two sides (I bring an F550 Service truck home nightly so it lives on one side behind a gate) plus I have space for two cars behind my garage. Truly a rare find where I live in So.Cal. Though I had a 12'x12' wooden shed built a couple of months after I moved-in and am toying with the idea of adding a second, smaller one soon.
My garage is 200 Sq.Ft. and like M in SC said, organization is key! To that end, I could do better. My problem is I generally have a couple of major automotive projects going-on at any one time so my work benches are generally cluttered with parts for them. I do a lot of my own fabrication and the tools I need for that take-up a lot of room, but I make it work. At present-time I have five MC's, two Quads and an old VW parked in my garage. The shed holds more ATV's and most of my yard tools. Two trucks parked behind my garage, three trailers (Vintage Travel Trailer, car trailer and utility trailer) on the other-side of the house, with space for my other VW.
All that and because I have a comically-short driveway one of my trucks lives on the street, as my GF asked if she could park her sports car in my driveway while she re-organized her garage to make space for it. That was six months ago...
One thing I may start doing again is storing my Travel Trailer at (or near) the places where I like to use it. For the two years where I was between houses I stored the Travel Trailer at a campground I liked to frequent in the Southern Sierra's. The rates for storage were reasonable and when I wanted to use it I'd call to make a reservation and they'd move the trailer from their storage lot to the space and back again when I left. A couple of friends have done the same and seem to get more use out of their RV's.
