Storage unit madness

My 15x30 storage unit is out of control, to much stuff, poorly organized and becoming worse all the time, my wife is a amateur rock hound which means she picks up rocks to be carefully scrutinized at a later date thus far sometime in 2050 I think. The only solution is a natural disaster at this point I fear. Anybody else have a storage problem? Oh there's a 2020 rebel 500 as well.

im lucky, i have a warehouse i can use, 1 full 4 level rack is mine, moslty spares, 1 bike as of right now. Most stuff is at home, but i have an overflow climate controlled 10x12 unit i keep 3 or 4 bikes in (its actually 1/2 way between here and work) & a set of tools as well. 12 bikes and 2 vintage cars takes up some real estate, plus all the equipment int he garage. stuff at work is mostly spares, but i did do the motor rebuild in the galaxie there 2 years ago (at work).

We are soooo lucky not to have a storage issue.

We're rural. Small 1,000 sq ft house on an acre - right off Historic Route 66.
Full basement and attached 2-car garage. 10x16 storage building out back.
... and the only thing that we collect is license plates. LOL

I took a concrete saw and made an opening for, and then installed a 42" door.
Ride up the driveway, then up the sidewalk and then into climate-controlled comfort. :)
It's handy bike storage.

So far, we haven't needed any extra space.

Those self storage units are quite the business! I rent a climate controlled unit in CO mostly for off-site storage of documents that would be a burden to replace as well as old photos and heirlooms, but the "extra" space ends up being used for storing spare parts and some seasonal items out of the way. There's got to be some law that says items will expand to fill any available space in storage units 🤣
It made it through the Marshall Fire last December while some other nearby structures didn't. Lots of surrounding asphalt and metal buildings worked out as a decent fire break. Good peace of mind at the least.

Yup, 24 square garage, and there is only a path to get through it. 10 motorcycles, lawn tractor with snowblower on it , seven bicycles, two welders, and a roll around toolbox. And a mobile home furnace for heat. Too much stuff.

I feel your pain. What is the saying about the universe not allowing a vacuum? I the storage units must exist like that, if there's an empty space it must be filled.

No storage unit for me, but I have a walk-out basement with a 32” door. Can just barely squeeze the bikes through. Space is always an issue…little pathways between stacks of totes and piles of stuff loosely organized into categories. It becomes difficult to create an orderly workspace. I will periodically conduct a purge of belongings that I haven’t used in a while. It’s hard, my mindset during a purge must be determined and unforgiving. Borderline cruel, even. “I haven’t used you, rusty spanner. You gotta go.” Usually then a project comes along and I wish I still had that odd bolt or scrap of thing. “Where are you, spanner, old friend? I need you now.”

In my area, new storage units are being built EVERYWHERE. They're even blasting flat areas on the limestone hills to build them. New parking areas are also on the increase. Some of these look like RV/Camper sales locations with all those brand new units.

Oh, and apartment buildings - popping up like weeds.

I can not stress 'organize organize organize' enough. garages i see with all the shit everywhere mixed in gives me anxiety. lol. I built a very nice shed out back for all the yard stuff. the back wall of the garage is a series of shelves with parts along the wall. Right side of the garage is workbench & equipment, left side is all bike parking. big toolbox rolls and can be moved, and in severe situations a car -can- be pulled in if need be.

right side of garage:

left side of garage:

back of garage as it currently is:

keep in mind, theres a -minimum- of 7-8 bikes along the RH wall parked in all these pics above, the below pic is jut a shot of some vintage racks, theres a few bikes behind me in this. If -i- can squeeze all this into a useable space, anybody can.

its amazing how much shit you can suff into a space.. and still access when you organize everything. and it doesn't come naturally to me, was a learned behavior for sure.

never store anything directly on the floor, buy parts bins and label them.

the storage unit literally just has 3 bike sin it, covered , a craftsman 5 drawer top box, and thats it. Throw out junk. the happiest day for me is trash day, i love hearing the rollout get emptied every week.

Here's last year's picture of the basement man cave. I am an advanced novice when it comes to stacking all that $hit in one place - and then being able to move all of them out.

Now, I know what you're thinking....
There's room for more in there. Right ?

😅😂🤣

Disclaimer: Our inventory changes frequently because many of those were purchased as derelicts and lovingly brought back and then sold. It's a hobby that keeps us busy, and it's better than watching TV. Only possible by having a climate controlled work place. :)

We run a motorcycle-friendly place here.
Sometimes, there's a line to get in.....

I wish I was as organized as you. I can't seem to get there, though!

It seems like you're not the only one having issues...storage unit buildings are popping up everywhere in my town...
