Woooweee, I took the trail truly off road today after 2 days of rain. I finally understand why people dont like the factory tires. It was like I was riding on a slip-n-slide!. I had a lot of fun but it was tough whenever there was mud. The tires handled rocks and gravel ok. I cant wait to ride again tomorrow.

Sounds like a lot of fun, hope you're able to find some like minded adventurers! Just a heads up, the Scooter Cannonball 2023 will be happening at the same time in June, so some folks up for that type of adventure may already have that in their plans. I would likely be signed up for the Scooter Cannonball myself if I wasn't already booked for Laconia Motorcycle Week in June. It's a busy time of year!
Do you face a lot of ridicule from the Harley types during bike week?

I'm riding with others to Laconia so the Honda Trail wouldn't be able to stay on schedule for that, it would be a looong ride. Will likely be taking my Moto Guzzi V7 there. There are closed minded people anywhere, or people who just like their one niche thing. It's the same for cars. Plenty of other people curious about stuff they aren't familiar with though. I can't picture a Honda Trail eliciting too negative a response from anyone unless they're stuck behind one.

This looks like fun. What is the time frame you guys are planning this? Would be cool if there was a google spreadsheet with the info.. interesting trip for sure.

Pulling this out of private conversation for the update. So this question went about as I expected, which is both really disappointing and also kinda cool. I spoke to both Viva Powersports and Las Cruces Motorsports around getting stuff shipped to the destination as they are two Honda Powersports dealers in the area.

Viva Powersports said "no shipping the bike to us unless you want to have the bike serviced" and that was the bulk of the conversation. They didn't also ask if I wanted to book a service, which was... weird, since I said, "I'm doing the Continental Divide Trail" as part of the background. The upsell moment was right there and not taken. There's a <spoiler> moment here so I'll leave that at the end.

Las Cruces Motorsports on the other hand is the next closest Powersports dealer, so I called them next. They were super cool about it, someone from the servicing department picked up and the boss said it was fine to do that, nothing else mentioned as a requirement. So Las Cruces Motorsports gets my business and some free PR, kudos to their service department for being cool, I'll probably buy some stuff while there because they came through for me. With that, the last major hurdle has been cleared.

Aside from that, we're now about 6 weeks out from the "it's happening" moment where the bike likely leaves on transportation to go to New Mexico. Revzilla is currently sold out of SR244 3.0's so I was very lucky I had one on hand already, something that I wasn't really expecting - they might restock between now and the start of the trip but it's nice to not have to stress about it. Most of the gear has been ordered or is in my hot little hands, the last little bit is all non-riding clothing related like pants and shirts. A test fit of gear shows that it's a little heavier than I want, but also fits in the luggage space that I have.

I'm not usually one to get excited about trips. But holy f... I absolutely cannot wait to prank the sh*t out of @bryanchurch06 and @imacbo on this trip.

A long time ago, with my DL650, I took the bike in for service at a dealership where the head mechanic absolutely did not want to deal with me. I called him out on something he said, he doubled down on it, and it would have been a super easy upsell to earn them a few extra hundred dollars, but it would have represented more than the bare minimum work from the mechanic.

As can be expected, my suspicions were right - the bike did not make it through the trip on the tires or brake pads, and I ended up having to do servicing much sooner than anticipated. There was some fallout from this on the shop's end as well.

To this day, whenever someone gives me the same general feel or feedback as that shop did, I try not to let them touch my bike. The times I have, I've had to go over it with a fine tooth comb later and the work was sloppy at best. Even worse, sometimes it's super obvious, like I walk over, stand next to the bike for 5s and say, "X was done wrong" (e.g. installing a 5xx chain on instead of a 4xx chain, and that is an actual example of something that has happened before).

Time seems to be moving very quickly now, Sneakydingo, imacbo and I will be meeting in Las Cruces on the 31st of May and starting our CDT ride on June 1st. We will post updates and pics of our ride as cell service allows. Thanks to everyone here for the great advice and best wishes.

If we're using a pilot taxiing the runway and taking off, this week is V1 for me - the go/no-go zone. Up to this point it was paperwork and planning only, time but no money lost. By Friday, I'll have talked to the other end to confirm again they can accept the bike, book any servicing that might get done, book the transportation, book flights, book hotels, and fully understand what my first few days will look like.

Installed the front case to carry me tire patch kit I just bought, I used the small apache case and cut a bracket from 2in x 1/8 aluminum bar, cover the bracket and bottom of case with closed cell foam from a walmart yoga mat and 3m glue, works perfectly. I used 1/4 20 rivnuts installed so I'm pulling against the rim so they cannot pull out, still building the crate I'm installing on the back, a regular piece of hillbilly engineering if I've ever seen one.

If any of you are going to ship your bikes, can you share some info on what the costs are? Which carrier, pickup location, destination location, if you could.
I'm using UShip, and I'm not being picky about my pricing. Every estimate I've thrown its way is around the $700-$800 range (before tax, before tip) from Seattle to El Paso. From Vegas to Seattle was about the same.

When it comes time to do a full cost breakdown after the trip I'll be sharing that with the forum.

Does anyone have experience with shipping general delivery to a post office? I want to ship the tires I'm using to Las cruces for the ride so I don't have to carry them on my bike, thanks for your help.

Yes, I've done that quite a bit while backpacking (food resupply boxes and bounce boxes) as well as with car and motorcycle parts while traveling. Best thing to do is call the post office first to make sure they can hold a general delivery package for you and for how long. Most rural post offices will, but in more populated areas there may only be one post office in the area that handles all of the general delivery parcels. When you ship the tires try to have a label on them that states the range of dates you expect to pick up the tires between.

If you're staying somewhere in Las Cruces like a hotel you might be able to ship there as another option.
