Well that is looking back… way back. But I’ll likely keep my trail.
Twice the money as the trail and a Chinese knock off engine. For that money it is reasonable to expect top tier engine and transmission. Hard pass but you enjoy it if its worth the price for your use 🤷‍♂️

It is a Chinese eng/transmission but it’s apparently decent quality, everything else else is mostly hand made right here in America. It’s and old school motorcycle, with few refinements for sure. It’s only money, and it’s fake money at that. ;)

Do I wish it had a Honda Engine/transmission yep, but they were apparently unable to source one.

Has the best warranty in the motorcycle industry.

I talked to them a few years ago. I don't think that they could not source another engine, they couldn't source any engines nearly as cheap as the Lifan. I guess the $300 Lifan is better that the $150 Chinese Honda copy engines 🤷‍♂️ I told them they would sale a lot more bikes if they put a Honda, Kawasaki ECT in the bike and increased the cost to cover the extra expense. $7500 for a Janus with Chinese 250 or $8500 for a Janus with a Honda 250.......think about it.

I doubt that buying a motorcycle engine from the big brands was even an option for them. They're too low volume and competing in the same (motorcycle) market as those brands. It's not like how US Legend Cars get a crate motor from Yamaha to use in their race cars. How many other bikes do you know of running a "real" Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, or Yamaha engine from the factory without wearing that branding or having a significant partnership with them? Usually it's something from BRP-Rotax, or it's something that's better suited for use on a go-kart.

spend your money on a legit vintage, or another modern retro. those are way overpriced and really not built that well. yes I've seen them up close and talked to one of th founders way back at a dgr. :boutique neckbeard bikes to ride to the coffee shop to pose.

I’ll look around some more and I’ll not just blindly purchase one of these. But I don’t want a purely street bike, and I’m aging so I don’t want a 400 lb bike either. I’m gonna go to one of their open houses and soak in some firsthand knowledge. Suggestions on other bikes are welcome.

Take that money you had ready to spend and keep it handi so you can jump when you find THE deal. Do your homework and figure out exactly what will fill the slot. As I get older the last thing I want to do is get something that looks good but is high maintenance, for me reliability is at the top of the list. Take your time and enjoy the search. Once you have a solid understanding of what bikes will be fit you can jump without hesitation on a good deal. That's the thing about really good deals, you hesitate they are gone.

I can assure you those would not fare well off road, or even on gravel roads. Look for an old honda ascot perhaps. If you want to go OLDER, ot suzuki TS250 might be an option.

That $8000 the Janus goes for can buy a lot of bike. Older bikes are great if one is as practiced in the art as you. Most of us are better served by something newer. Too bad Honda doesn't offer the CL300 here. $5000 and seems like a good fit for his stated goal.

all depends if you want to actually use it, or stand next to it smugly. for the same money though,a well sorted vintage can be had w out having to fiddle with it all the time. I rarely have to REPAIR mine, i spend most of my time modifying them. (just to be clear). this 67 kawasaki made it 55 years before needing the cases split. It'll out live me, or at least my riding ability, for sure.

The Triumph 400 Scrambler looks like a great value and a nice motorcycle. Much less expensive than the Honda CL500 and has a better look. Aesthetics matter to me and the Scrambler is a good looking bile that is reminiscent of the Honda CL's I hade in high school.
