Canada is getting the updated 2023 Model year Honda Trail 125 with the higher compression Euro 5 compliant engine. Canada and USA vehicle requirements are very similar, close enough that EPA certification is recognized in Canada (but Environment Canada certification is not recognized in the USA), so for anyone waiting on the updated 2023 model in the USA this suggests it might be a step closer to arrival.

February 16, 2023 — Markham, ON.

Honda Canada is pleased to announce that the 2023 Honda Trail125 ABS will be making its Canadian debut this spring.
The Honda Trail125 ABS resurrects a revered brand by injecting a healthy dose of practical design and hassle-free technology to create a miniMOTO that pays tribute to the past while adapting easily to modern lifestyles.
Debuted in 2019 as a concept model at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show, nearly 60 years after the original 1961 Trail 50 was released, the Trail125 received rave reviews from the public, and was followed up with many requests for a production model in Canada. That wish is now being granted with the Honda Trail125 ABS rolling into the Canadian miniMOTO line up, introducing riders to the thrills of riding on pavement and backroads alike.
Honda's designers kept the iconic aesthetic, simplicity and ruggedness that propelled the purchase of hundreds of thousands of CT-series machines over six decades, while updating the motorcycle to a modern package. The Trail125 is powered by a semi-automatic, air-cooled 125cc four-stroke, single-cylinder engine with modern conveniences such as PGM-fuel Injection, electric start, a full LED lighting package and disc brakes with front wheel ABS. The backup kick start, high air intake, upswept exhaust, spoked rims, standard skid plate and cargo rack add a ruggedness that is unique to this bike in the miniMOTO portfolio, readying it for any adventure, big or small.
"We are extremely excited to bring the Honda Trail125 ABS to Canada, it's a bike that Honda fans and consumers have been waiting for," said Ryan Kelly, Assistant Vice President of Powersports and Power Equipment, Honda Canada. "Honda has been a perennial leader in the dual sport and miniMOTO spaces for decades and with the introduction of the new Trail125 ABS to our lineup in Canada, we know it will be a successful bike that Honda enthusiasts will embrace."
Other features and benefits:
  • Classic styling: Pays tribute to the generations of Honda Trail motorcycles that have come before it, including the original 1961 Trail 50 by preserving the symbolic elements such as the upswept muffler, air-cleaner cover, fuel tank, rear carrier, steel front fender, turn signals, foot pegs and handgrips.
  • Modern Engine: The 125cc four-stroke, single-cylinder overhead-camshaft design with programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) with automatic enrichment and electronic ignition ensure trouble-free starting and efficient operation in every conceivable condition.
  • Semi-automatic transmission: The heel-toe shifter and no clutch lever make shifting the four-speed transmission a breeze
  • High air intake and upswept exhaust: Provide better clearance from dirt and water
  • Disc brakes: Front and rear disc brakes with front wheel ABS help in making controlled stops in less-than-ideal situations, without impacting off-road capabilities
  • Off-Road capable: Capable ground clearance, skid plate, spoked rims and back up kick-start make the Trail125 ABS ready for any adventure.
The 2023 Honda Trail125 ABS will be available for sale at Canadian dealerships in April.

red again ,would have like to see a new color
Holy smokes at least they are available. I wonder if the engine is the same as the 22s that were available in the states or is it the newer one with the oil filter? Either way it is good news for you guys.

This begs a question to anyone on a pre 2022 USA spec CT….if Honda brings the newer engine and a 5 speed how many of you would trade up?
I have only owned my 22 for 5 weeks but I think I would have to at least call my dealer.

In other markets, still a 4 speed.

From what I read- new engine currently has less modability. If they figure out a better tuning solution, I'll be 100% happy with my pre-facelift model.

Right, all the Trail 125s, including the 2023 models, are 4-speeds. The confusion might be that the Honda Grom and Monkey were updated with 5-speeds, that the updated adjustable rear shocks on the 2023 Trail 125s have 5 different settings, or that some of the "new" Honda CT125 articles and videos feature a highly modified USA bike with a Kitaco Neo 181cc BBK and 5-speed conversion by Speedshop Wayne out of Georgia.

It seems like the performance difference is pretty negligible, so IMO not worth trading or waiting for a 2023 model if you've got a line on one now. Ride what ya got. If you had an equal chance at either, the 2023 has some nice improvements that might be worth taking if you're not expecting to hot rod the engine immediately.

@RustyRodder is also right about the aftermarket, there's a huge aftermarket of parts for the now older engine that the 2021-2022 CT125s have. Most of the limitations are around parts specific to the semi-auto-trans configuration in the Trail. Many of those parts are in common with the Wave 125i which happens to be an entry level drag bike in Thailand, the parts just aren't readily available to the USA, confirmed to be compatible with the CT125, or marketed as CT125 parts. Down the road, talking years from now, the aftermarket for the Euro 5 engine will catch up and then eventually surpass the prior gen.

Based on the specs they list, it's the new euro 5 engine with the oil filter.

Bore & Stroke 50.0 mm x 63.1 mm
Compression Ratio 10.0:1

Not a new color for North America, but it is a new colour since it's Canadian ;) I'll see myself out...

I have a soft spot for small bikes (and big ones too) and have owned numerous 50cc and larger scooters, and currently own a 2010 Honda SH150i. When I saw the CT125 available in the US, I decided to buy one if they were ever imported into Canada. I ordered one last Friday, immediately after seeing the email from Honda Canada saying they were importing the CT125 into Canada. Sturgess Cycle in Hamilton took my deposit after confirming that they would be available. Fingers crossed.

I just joined the forum today so this is my first post!

New to the forum. From Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Jut put my name on a 2023. Been bugging my dealer about when we would get them up here!
Gonna be my run around town and occasional rural adventure rig. We’ll see how much I like it before I commit to a long tour. The idea of slow touring on backroads and trails really appeals to me so I hope to eventually do that on it. I have 5 other bikes but already think this will be a favourite.

I put a deposit down at Toy's in Moncton the day that Honda Canada made the availability announcement. The first one that they get in is mine. They said they are getting "several", and that Honda Canada is telling them April delivery.
It's going to look nice beside my '77 CT90.
