Clunking sound when off throttle in higher gears

Hi all,
I took my Trail 125 for a spirited ride today. About 2 hours of riding twisty back roads at a pretty constant speed of 40-50mph.
I had a brief run on the highway as well, open throttle up to 55mph for about 10 mins.

When riding the main roads home in traffic I started to notice some clunking sounds. When in higher gears (3rd and 4th) while decelerating I noticed a clunking sound (also FELT a clunk coming from the engine/gearbox.) It was present at about 3500 rpm (I have an aftermarket tachometer). It would go away if I downshifted to 1st or coasted in neutral. After experimenting I can reliably reproduce the sound at 3500 rp in 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear if I am coasting. It goes away when I accelerate.

I'm not sure what the sound could be. Is is the centrifugal clutch slipping due to low speed/no acceleration in a higher gear?
How should I go about troubleshooting this?
Is this just a normal sound due to my bad riding technique with not downshifting and coasting in high gears?

The bike has about 750 miles on it, had the 600mile oil change done.
My first instinct is to let the bike sit and cool down, then see if I can reproduce the sound. My next steps were going to be a clutch adjustment and then an oil change.

I just eyeball it every once in a while, adjust when needed. every rider is different. I have over 3k on my bike, i can assure you i haven't adjusted the chain 10 times.
