Cold weather starting

Only if it’ll start.😁 Seriously, though, yes I intend to ride when it gets that cold. I’ve ridden snowmobiles in those temperatures, up on Jay Peak (Vermont), when I had a job snowmaking. One of the best jobs I’ve ever had. It’s pretty amazing to be on a snow covered mountaintop at midnight! Sometimes we carried ice axes. For riding the donkey, I’m wearing a Klim onsie over lots and lots of down, heated liners over Outdoor Research mitts, two balaclavas at once, and obviously no exposed skin anywhere.
Wait, the liners go Under the mitts.

I didn't think starting fluid would help on a FI engine that wasn't worn out? Won't the injectors vaporize the fuel even in cold conditions?
Starting fluid is a big boost being so volatile, it's not the amount it's the combustible vapor which is more potent than gasoline. Carburetor or injection doesn't matter in this case

New 2024 Trail 125. Less than 200 miles on Odometer. Not even Cold Weather but cold engine starting 40° & up or sitting for an
hour + - in 60° +, the bike NEVER starts on first attempt (electric starting). I think I read in the little owners manual before I lost it
that IF ( not when every time) the engine fails to start, turn the key off and wait 10 seconds. It has always started. On second attemptThough not good for confidence in surely starting. No wonder they put a kick start on this Model.

My God this is 2024/2025. Should it take 2 attempts to start your motorbike. Do you think Honda car owners would put up with such nonsense.

My 2019 Cub start immediately all the time. It does take a few extra spins in the Cold. I do use a trickle charger on both bikes.

is there something wrong with this Trail Model ?

What you are describing sounds specific to your bike and not generally true for other Trail 125s. How is the battery health? Do you get a check engine light indicating there's a DTC code stored? Low voltage could mess with any one of the sensors and cause a hard starting condition.

You can download the owner's manual here:

No issues starting my Trail in ~40 degree weather (about as cold as it gets here in So.Cal.) @char-lee what you're describing sounds like there may be a problem with your fuel pump or with you fuel, namely how old is the fuel in your bike.

My CT has no issues starting on the first try since new. The DAX… However…is another story. She always died the first time when I first got her but started fine the second try. Seems to have been better after about 75 miles, now it starts and runs the first time two out of three times.. she's only got 90 miles or so now but mostly short runs around town. Maybe it'll get better as your bike gets broken in?

Thanks for the replies and advice.

I took the bike to my dealer and the mechanic , who I have known for many years and would be the only person I would trust and to work on a bike, told me everything diagnostically checked out OK.
He said the battery checked out fine.

The mechanic also said that it took 8 SECONDS for the engine to start after engaging the starter. Caused by California Emissions.

I said “That’s Ridiculous”

Did he tell you what specifically he attributes it to? Sounds like a B.S. explanation to just say it's caused by "California Emissions" without pointing to anything in particular, especially since the only emissions controls this bike has in the USA (it's a 50 state bike) that it doesn't also have in have in its primary market of Japan is the exhaust spark arrestor.

Another thought is to check the timing at the cam sprocket against the timing marks on the flywheel. It would be a freak thing, but one owner found they were off with the issue surprisingly on the flywheel side. Don't know that bike's history other than the claim of it having been "stock".
Post about it in a private Honda Trail 125 Facebook group:

Reply to hard starting new ‘24 Trail 125 in case any new owner experiences the same situation.
The bike in question now starts right ‘off the bat’ instead of cranking for 8 + seconds, at 500 + mi. I did aboulutely nothing unless installing Dual Fiamm horns to replace the stock weak Clown Horn.
The End
