This engine has been around since long before synthetic oil. Don’t waste money on synthetic, just keep it fresh and it will last forever. It’s a Honda. 8hp, can’t hurt itself.
Mineral based oils begin oxidizing, breaking down and burning at 350 to 400 degrees. Synthetics withstand a minimum of 450 degrees before suffering the same degradation with some withstanding close to 600 degrees. Air cooled engines can get hot, very hot depending on the circumstances. The little red mules cost most folks $5000 give or take. I'll spend the extra $20 to $40 a year for good synthetic oil, cheap insurance in my book...but we all have our priorities.🤦‍♂️

you do realize its NOT the same motor as the old CT's, right? this particular one IS a derivative of the grom motor. was 1st seen in 13-14 in that form.

either oil is fine though. at 10 bucks a qt, synthetic isn't going to break anybody's budget and does do better in hot climates typically. .02
It goes back further than that outside the USA, the Grom 125cc motor and 4-speed came from the Honda Wave 125.

Canada. It’s $11 a litre for regular Honda oil at the local dealer.
Ouch. I'll have to get the Swayze Express train going again to smuggle oil into Canada lol
FWIW, buying a gallon jug is sometimes a savings if that volume is reasonable for you to have on hand. Depending on where you buy it from, in the USA a gallon costs anywhere from being the same as 2 quarts to being no savings at all over 4 quarts.

That's why I have a 1 gallon jug in my shed 😂 it cost less than buying 3 quarts. Maybe the bottles are gold plated?

Thinking about my investment into the Trail and the recommended service intervals I choose to support the dealer that treats me fairly and have them use the oil that Honda says. Keeping good relations can’t be all bad.

I got this Motul 5100 4T 10W-30 at Cycle Gear to top off. I lost a couple ounces after the first 300 miles. Can I use this for my first oil change? Or should I get the Honda stuff?
I'm coming up on an early oil change for the C125 and the CT will come up very quickly. I was looking at the Motul but wasn't entirely sure if MA2 was ok as the manual states MA...
After checking online I'm still none the wiser if MA2 will work or not. I miss the days when you simply picked up the correct weight and bunged it in.
Any advice appreciated.

jaso ma2 is fine, it really just specifies its 'ok' for use with catalytic converters, and has modifiers that are better for wet clutches.. so, it wont hurt anything and motul is great product. Id run it w out a second thought.

I'm just going to use what I will be using in my other Honda, Red Line 10w30. It has gone up $4/qt since the last time I bought a case of it. At $21/qt now, I don't know if I'll be buying more.

that’s a little pricy to me but if it keeps you happy. I know it’s less than a qt per change but on my non-hyper performance engine I will not be able to use the benefits. Just my thoughts.

Haha DEAL !! I stopped into local Honda Motorsport Dealer in Ottawa the other day 1L Honda GN4 regular oil $17.99+ tax … so I looked at my normal Motul 7100 $38.95 1L … is this madness not gone too far …

Engines are lasting way longer than they did not too long ago. Better metallurgy, more precise manufacturing, EFI allowing better fuel balance between cylinders and in no small part synthetic oil. At $5 to $10 more a year to use top shelf synthetic oils is penny wise dollar foolish not to IMO.

Honda GN4 10W – 30 conventional oil for me. Oil changed at 100 miles, 500 miles, and every 1000 miles or one year thereafter. Since my intervals are much shorter than the factory recommendation, I figure that conventional oil will do just fine. Still kind of amazed at the 4000 mile recommended interval.
