An unspoken agreement.
I rode my bike to the carwash yesterday, a distance of about 14 miles roundtrip with about 85% dirt road. Just a simple ride most of us do without any thought about it, especially if you are an experienced rider. However it started me thinking about the act of riding any motorcycle, any distance experienced or not. If you have loved ones in your life or you are the one responsible for paying bills for your spouse and children? then its not such a simple thing anymore, in fact your entering into a contract with your loved ones that yes I'm going to do this possibly dangerous thing, but I'm also going to do everything in my power to come home with the same amount of skin and bone i left with. And that's the agreement, you may not say it every time, your loved one may just casually say be careful, but they mean much more than that. I was 27 when i 1st became aware of my responsibility, my daughter was born and suddenly i couldn't say screw it anymore and act like a fool, there was another human who needed me in a way no one else ever had, or maybe id never felt it before if they did. now 30 some years later I'm not responsible for anyone's survival. In reality riding my motorcycle or atv is about as dangerous as i get and I'm by no means a daredevil on either, but still there it is, each time i leave the house on 2 wheels or 4 I'm making that promise to my wife no matter what I'm coming home. so i ride a little slower now, and if you saw my last crash on video i basically try to just fall over now, do the world's worst PLF and start again. And if you ride a bike you're making the same promise to someone so be a little more careful, look a little longer before pulling out, slow down a little in the curves. Be careful, have fun but remember someone loves you, and would be terribly sad if you were gone.
