I see some people have an extra black exhaust shield for the passenger. Is this necessary? Don't want my wife to get a boo boo....Just thought I'd ask.

Cheers,
Jamie

The stocker doesn't get hot enough to burn... The overseas and other photos have the black add on guard that doesn't come on the US versions if that is what you are seeing...

Yep, the black plastic on the exhaust shield is standard in markets where the bike has been sold with passenger pegs. Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. It also helps keeps the metal heat shield from getting marked up. If you're running the stock exhaust temperature shouldn't be an issue. In terms of safety it's a good idea to wear long pants on a motorcycle. Not saying I always do, but I've sure got a lot of scars from riding dirtbikes in shorts.

I rode my bike yesterday and was surprised that the exhaust wasn't that hot when I garaged it. I agree with your comment about long pants although sometimes it's just too dang hot for them. I'll be riding in shorts quite a bit this summer. As Some Guy Rides, Ang says, "why am I an idiot... why"!

Back in 1992 I had my Kawasaki KZ1000 'sold' to a guy that made me promise not to sell it to anyone else. After an hour of waiting for him to show up I was a tad pissed off and thirsty so went for a cold one at my local market blocks away. Shorts, t-shirt, etc. Usually wore all the safety gear. Heck, I'm not sure I had my helmet on now that I think about it....Guy who never saw me pulled out in front of me and damn near killed me. My metal parts from that day are a great reminder to ALWAYS wear my safety gear. Now, don't get me wrong, if I'm going to the camp host to get some firewood in a campground most likely I will forgo said gear but otherwise it will be adorned. Thanks for the knowledge on the exhaust shield!!! Love this forum :D
